NEWS >>> THEATRE AUDIO Olympic Studios Rejuvenated
OLYMPIC STUDIOS has reopened as a Dolby Atmos-equipped cinema with cafe, dining room, and members’ club in Barnes, London.
In the heyday of British music, Olympic
played host to The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Queen, and even stole The Beatles away from Abbey Road for a few tracks. It was purchased by Virgin in 1987 and then became part of EMI’s portfolio in 1992 before being put on the market in 2008. Local resident Stephen Burdge, who founded
film promotion agency Empire Design in 1996, made the leap to save the Olympic Studio building from being converted into flats. “Olympic was always known for
experimenting with sound and it seemed important for us to do something special with sound,” said Burdge. “We spent a long time on the acoustics and speaker choices, but Atmos was the icing on the cake.” Olympic’s Dolby Atmos set-up is the first cinema install for Flare Audio, which has been steadily expanding its reach in the pro-audio industry. The set-up includes three X3Cs behind the screen, 44 V8Cs handling the rigours of Atmos’ object-based surround mixing
with two SB21Cs and two SB18Cs taking on the bass response. Screen 1,
which was the main recording space, has maintained much of the original acoustic treatment and also features a small stage area (“In case Mick, Ronnie, and the boys decide to pop by,” comment Burdge). Olympic is also holding onto its studio roots
as producer Chris Kimsey, who started his career at Olympic in 1967, will be opening up a small recording studio within the space. The cinema began its first run of films last
month with Captain Phillips, and will be the only cinema in London to show Alfonso Cuarón’s latest, Gravity, in Dolby Atmos.
