Red Alert

With its vivid make-up looks and striking colour palettes, the dawning of the new Autumn / Winter season presents the perfect excuse to help awaken your clients’ more daring side.

As the days turn colder and the nights darker, this time of year switches focus from the freshness associated with Spring / Summer and revs up the drama with the help of rich sensuous shades and bold fashion statements.

Early this year designers gathered from around the world to showcase the must-have beauty trends on the Autumn / Winter 2013 Fashion Week catwalks. To help provide you with inspiration, we shine a spotlight on the make-up looks set to make an impact in the coming months ahead...

Retro beauty

On the Armani and Carolina Herrera runways the focus was firmly on ladylike allure with flawless skin, sultry stares and temptress red lips all harking back to the golden era of the Hollywood starlet.

No screen siren would be caught without her classic crimson pout, and red lips continue to be one beauty’s most enduring make-up trends. Yet for many women the injection of such a bold colour can at first seem a little daunting. Luckily, there is a wide spectrum of shades available to encompass your entire clientele, whether their desired hue is simply subtle or superbly striking. “Use a red lip liner to create the desired shape and blend onto the whole lip. This will help hold the lipstick colour you apply next,” suggests artist Sophie

Higginson who is part of Dermalogica’s Insider Programme for professional make-up artists. “Use a lip brush for a precise application as there is no room for error with a bold lip like this.”

All that glitters

When we think of the party season often one word springs to mind – glitter! At Paris Fashion Week, make- up artists working backstage at the Chanel A/W13 show made sure models sparkled with glistening eyes on the runway. Glitter can be found in a multitude of products from eyeshadow to lipgloss, so your clients can add as much bling to their appearances as they desire. Why not also apply and recommend illuminating creams and shimmers? These are great for contouring and highlighting areas of the face and décolleté.

Where there’s smoke...

Evening glamour wouldn’t be complete without the classic smoky eye, which can quickly take your client’s look from day to night. Smouldering and sultry, the sheer versatility of a smoky eye means that it can work on women of all ages. “Use an eyeshadow base to help maintain the look for longer,” comments Sophie. “Having a small selection of make-up brushes for applying eyeshadow is crucial especially with a smoky eye as blending is very important as it's what creates that smoky look, rather than hard lines.”

Merlot Magic

For lips this season it’s all about making a statement with the juicy and

fruity tones of plum, raspberry and rich claret. Wine-stained lips were sported by models at the Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton and Vera Wang showcases amongst others, thus becoming one of the most must- have beauty styles for Autumn / Winter.

A bold lip can really help add an intriguing pop of colour, so the trick is to keep accompanying make-up minimal and make sure your client’s pout is in great condition before any colour is applied. “Exfoliate lips using Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant and moisturise with a lip conditioner that is more matte than shiny,” says Sophie. “Then lightly apply plum lipstick that isn't too glossy with a brush and really buff into the lip to create the stain. It's not supposed to look precise and perfect but soft and pretty with a hint of colour.”

The girl next door

Many designers opted for nude and neutral tones on the runway including Oscar de la Renta and Donna Karan. Perfect for daytime wear or for those clients who may not desire a dramatic makeover, the real key to this style is a beautiful, fresh complexion. Rosy cheeks instantly radiate health and happiness, so a touch of blush can help to revive Winter skins. “Use a crème blush in peachy-pink tones to create that natural glow on the apples of the cheeks,” recommends Sophie. “Advise your clients to use a small amount and build on to achieve the desired look. Remember less is more!”
