Asia - a hotbed for automation

A RECENT REPORT by IHS has shown that in 2012, capital expenditure on industrial automation equipment in Asia reached a total of $76.6bn, repre- senting 46% of global investments in the sector.

Despite this established and rising trend, selling industrial automation equipment in Asia remains a clear business opportunity and one where many European providers are lagging behind. One of the key areas of opportunity is the power industry, where the booming consumer and industrial power markets in developing economies such as China and India have created rocketing demand. In China the per capita energy use is still a long way behind most of Western Europe, meaning the potential for growth is still huge.

B&R’s illuminated ring keypad mod- ules with IP65 protection are designed for installation directly on the machine. First introduced in early 2012, the latest addition to this series is a model that includes an integrated E-stop button. With both the button and the electronics integrated in a low profile housing and standard M8/M12

Due to the current economic climate, many Asian companies are taking a more careful approach to investment - becoming more demanding towards their suppliers and making more enquiries before purchasing. Furthermore, according to IHS’ research, several Chinese manufacturers are currently developing products which are in direct competition with the ones provided by Western suppliers of indus- trial automation. These are only a few of the obstacles facing European vendors who want to penetrate the Asian market to change the way they do business.

Flexibility and the ability to respond to very specific demands are becoming essential factors when dealing with the Asian market. Being able to offer technologies and products which are com- patible with the needs of Asian clients is no longer an option - it’s a must. www.ihs.com

connectors, installation and wiring are very simple. These keypads can be mounted anywhere on the machine at intervals of up to 100m. Installed using only two screws, they require no additional accessories and can easily be connected to any common bus system. The signals for the E-stop button can be connected directly to a safety circuit or incorporated via SafeIO modules into an integrated safety network such as openSAFETY. B&R E-stop keypad modules meet the most stringent requirements for ergonomics and are easy to clean. With no surface edges, indentations or grooves, these modules are well suited for use in hygienic applications as well. In addition to providing tactile feedback, the illuminated ring keys ensure an even distribution of light for clear signaling and can also be labeled individually. Landmark contract for Chinese subsea valve industry

ROTORK GEARS, THE valve gearbox and valve accessory division in the Rotork group of flow control businesses, has successfully completed a landmark contract in the history of the Chinese subsea valve industry.

In 2012 the government in China initiated an incentive policy to encourage the country’s valve making industry to develop its own subsea valves to serve a market that has been traditionally dominated by foreign manufac- turers. Through its factory in China, Rotork Gears has been working closely with the Chinese valve makers involved with subsea valve production to provide technical and engineering support. Early in 2013 these efforts were rewarded with an order from the Shanghai Pudong Hanwei Valve Company.

The contract involves two WGS Series subsea gearboxes fitted to a double block and bleed valve for a natural gas pipeline in the Bohai Sea. The 8" Class 600 valve is being installed at a depth of 30m on a pipeline serv- ing the Suizhong SZ36-1 oilfield and oper- ated by the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).

Designed for heavy duty subsea applica- tions, the Rotork WGS quarter-turn gearbox features a worm shaft supported on taper roller bearings, a high strength alloy steel worm screw and a membrane or piston type pressure compensator to enable operation at any depth. Gearboxes can be equipped with a high visibility position indicator, vertical or horizontal ROV inputs and a handwheel for

diver operation. WGS gearboxes are perma- nently lubricated and designed for output torques of up to 500,000Nm. www.rotork.com
