Products Technology File Setting new standards in control performance
Omron’s new E5_C range of temperature controllers feature a large easy to read display, fast simple set-up and 50ms loop update and sampling period time. The compact on-panel units, which project only 60mm into the panel, are easy to install, even in cramped locations and are available in a variety of sizes - E5CC (48x48mm), E5EC (48x96mm) and E5AC (96x96mm). In addition, the newest member in this series, the E5DC DIN-rail mountable in-panel controller, is only 22.5mm wide and follows the same easy set-up structure as the other models in the range. The large high contrast white LED display featured by these controllers can be read from a distance at almost any angle, irrespective of the ambient lighting conditions, maximis- ing user convenience and virtually eliminating the risk of reading errors. The inclusion of an auto-tuning function simplifies set-up, and Omron’s CX-Thermo support software enables faster parameter setting and straightforward device adjustment as well as greatly simplifying maintenance. Accurate and responsive control is assured by the fast 50ms loop update and sampling period time of the new controllers and by the use of Omron’s 2-PID control algorithm. This powerful, patented algorithm provides enhanced control stability, which guarantees con- sistent product quality. For less demanding applications, the E5CC/E5EC/E5AC con-
trollers also support simple on/off control. In addition some models offer PRR valve posi- tioning outputs to control motor driven valves, with or without potentiometer feedback, which are well suited for use in fluid mixing and gas flow applications. Omron

Enter 223 Vision system for FMD quality checks
Pharmaceutical coding specialist Travtec has intro- duced a new vision system into its equipment portfolio. The Lixis PVS is a high end OCR/OCV imaging system that is suitable for a variety of inspection requirements throughout the packaging process. In particular, it pro- vides effective monitoring to ensure that coding opera- tions are meeting the requirements of the forthcoming EC Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD). The Lixis PVS can carry out a variety of quality
checks. Its character recognition software reads both pre-printed and inline printing and it automatically detects shift or rotation variations. Colour verifica- tion can also be specified. All types of barcodes can be monitored including standard formats (EAN, Code 128), pharmaceutical industry variants such as Pharmacode and Datamatrix, and 1D and 2D codes. In addition, the system can be programmed to check the accuracy of logos and artwork and for the pres- ence and position of labels, caps and other items. A colour touchscreen interface, including on-screen help and interactive tutorial, ensures fast set-up. An unlimited number of pre-set patterns and character details can be stored in the memory for fast changeovers, and detailed production reports and defective images can be outputted for process analysis. The Lixis PVS is easy to integrate into existing pro- duction equipment including cartoners, leaflet fold- ers, labelling machines, blistering machines, carton codifiers and tube fillers. Up to 800 images per minute can be verified depending on the application. Travtec

High power servo motors up to 140kW
8KS motors open up new possibilities for applications in a wide range of industries that require high power. In addition, these servo motors are available with either axial or radial fans, water cooling and optional mounting feet. This motor series is also a complement for implementing high powered yet energy efficient servo hydraulic drive solutions together with B&R’s servo pump control. The variant with rein- forced bearings, for example, makes it possible to set-up high torque belt feed axes for electric injec- tion moulding machines.
B&R has expanded its product line to include servo motors with high torque and an extended range of speeds. The motors in the 8KS series provide up to 140kW of power and stall torque up to 555Nm. Available in two sizes with speeds up to 3,000rpm,
Automation OCTOBER 2013
The servo motors in this series come equipped with a resolver interface, an optical encoder with EnDat interface and an embedded parameter chip, ensuring seamless compatibility with ACOPOSmulti drives and easy integration into B&R’s entire system landscape. B&R Automation

Smart camera for
ID and tracking BOA IDR is a smart camera capable of barcode, character and pattern identifica- tion or verification in a single self con- tained unit. It allows manufacturers to ensure that all product markings are cor- rect when they leave the factory floor. BOA IDR provides an integrated solution for defect detection and reject tracking for high speed applications in the automo- tive, consumer, electronics, packaging and pharmaceutical industries. BOA IDR allows manufacturers to com- bine 1D and 2D tracking with other inspection tasks. These include character reading (OCR) and feature verification. 1D and 2D capabilities include part val- idation, verification, traceability and label validation in addition to 2D error-proofing. Comprehensive pattern recognition facili- ties include label presence and place- ment, tamper-proofing pattern verifica- tion, cap presence and placement, print- ed text verification and robot guidance. The preloaded IDR application can be quickly set-up and deployed using a standard web browser interface. No software installation is necessary, except for the fully functional emulator that
supports offline development and debugging. The versatile BOA IDR fea- tures a four-step user interface designed to guide first time vision users but this also offers advanced features such as custom scripting for experienced integrators.
The camera is available in a choice of
resolutions and provides standard industrial Ethernet protocols for inte- grating into the factory network. Stemmer Imaging
