30 Heat Pumps

scheme sets example for energy efficiency

A BUILDING refurbishment for a ‘mixed use scheme’ in Covent Garden, which combines a restaurant, office space and residential flats with a penthouse apartment, is installing the latest energy efficient heating and cooling system from temperature control specialist, ICS Cool Energy.

The building needs a robust supply of heating, cooling and hot water for commercial and residential occupants, so a powerful system with high temperatures and maximum reliability is a necessity. Energy efficiency is also a ‘must’. ICS Cool Energy has supplied AW-HT units for high temperatures to support the building’s demands for domestic hot water (DHW) and low temperature hot water (LTHW).

The units have a wide temperature range which can deliver water heating up to 65°C with operating limits down to -20°C with maximum reliability and efficiency.

Commercial Compressors Covent Garden refurbishment The intelligence

Providing heating for hot water and sanitary purposes, the units can also be easily integrated into the building’s existing heating system for a quick and easy installation. An i-NRG inverter-driven heat pump also provided LTHW, DHW and recovery for the penthouse occupants. The unit provides the exact energy required by the apartment’s system, perfectly following the real load of the building due to the modulation of the DC inverter fan. Adam Spolnik, director and specialist in industrial temperature control at ICS Cool Energy explains: “The AW-HT heat pumps and i-NRG provide the building with ‘A’ class premium efficiency and low noise levels, so as not to disturb neighbouring residents. “These modern heat pumps supply plant and domestic hot water for year-round operation for heating, cooling, domestic hot water and air conditioning, so are perfect for a variety of applications.”

The intelligent CSVH Compressor

BITZER’S latest intelligent compressors are typified by the new generation of Bitzer CSVH compact screw compressors.

The highly energy efficient operation of the new range is combined with intelligent application control software, making the CSVH compressor one of the most complete solutions for liquid chiller, heat pump and air conditioning applications.

Using in-built software allows interrogation of the CSVH using a PC.

It also allows simple

incorporation into a BMS system using Modbus.

This will ensure that the compressor can continuously operate automatically with optimum energy efficiency within its application envelope. The CSVH R134a semi- hermetic screw compressor range is based upon Bitzer’s proven CSH screw compressor technology, with the inclusion of variable speed operation for optimum energy efficiency. A frequency inverter provides infinite capacity modulation and Bitzer claims that the CSVH range has the highest modulation range on the market:  25%-100% for the CSVH24- 125Y version;

 20%-100% for the CSVH25- 160Y version

 16%-100% for the CSVH26- 200Y model.

Energy efficiency Other energy efficiency characteristics include the CSVH’s optimised and improved European Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (ESEER) values

– essential for applications with high loads in the summer and part loads at other times of the year.

The CSVH pre-wired

compressor package integrates the frequency inverter with sensors that provide operational protection and control and solenoid valves.

External wiring requirements have also been minimised for ease of installation.

Weights and warnings The compressor has the shortest length and lowest weight for a compressor in its class. The sensors cover variables such as pressure limits, motor temperature, oil discharge and gas temperatures.

Warnings are communicated through an RS485 link using BEST (Bitzer Electronic Service Tool) software to a PC or using an RS485 Modbus connection for remote diagnosis.

Digital and analogue input/ output channels are also included.

Once the warnings are given, corrective measures can be instantly taken.

By monitoring and reacting to these operational requirements, the CSVH compressor will remain inside the application envelope at all times. Chiller, heat pumps and air-conditioning systems will continuously receive exactly the right level of cooling. Events, alarms and other data from the compressor are recorded for historical investigation.

Ecoline

Bitzer has also introduced the ‘new Ecoline’ reciprocating
