So, how can I win one of those Awards?

t’s that time of year when Awards ceremonies abound. Our sister magazine Heating and Ventilating Review had a spectacular Awards night on 9th October, as did CIBSE, and also the Scottish fashion industry.

I

Our very own version of the Oscars, the ACR News Awards takes place in February at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham, and is open for entries right now, and the deadline has been extended to 28 November.

I know that for some of you, the word ‘deadline’ means ‘time to start thinking about it’, so let me just say that the end of November is the ‘set in stone, must be with us by’ deadline, because the judging takes place shortly after, so do make sure you get your entries in to us by then.

Full information can be found at www. acrnewsawards.com/enter/

Entries are steadily trickling in even as I write, and over the last few weeks I’ve had a lot of questions and enquiries on how to enter, so I thought I’d answer some of the really common ones here.

How do I win? That’s always a good question. And I always answer: start by entering. I don’t think that’s the answer people are looking for, but it’s the one they’ll get. If you don’t enter, you’ll never win and you’ll never know if you could have done.

How long should an entry be? This is quite key and can be surprisingly subjective. Too short and you could short- change yourself, too long and you could be creating a cure for insomnia. A general guideline might be around 800 words, but this is not a rule. After all, a picture might speak a thousand words all by itself. And that’s another thing. Don’t put all your eggs in the picture basket. With a half dozen plus judges, they will not all be poring over all the original entries at the same time. Although they will see and be able to freely examine the original full- colour cinematic quality entry complete with Dolby surround-sound and 3-D glasses, their first sight of all the entries may well be in black and white printed or photocopy form.

Lastly, do remember that the judges are experts in their areas, and quite possibly yours. And they may not all be experts in all areas, but they’ve all been in our

industry for a long time, and they will likely know a thing or two about what you’re putting in front of them. They will recognise over-inflated claims and they will know what marketing bedazzled jargon means.

Not that I’m saying anyone in our industry does either of those things of course. It’s just that in my experience in other sectors, sometimes a creative marketing type or a passionate engineering type can very occasionally get a little over-excited about their product, project or service. Testimonials from customers are always a good way to strengthen an entry.

Most importantly, remember that the ACR New Awards is about how great our industry is, so if you have something you’re proud of within our industry, then shout about it.
