Taking it easy on Eaton O

ur synod bishop, Jim Hazelwood, visited our church in May and my kids are infatuated with him. In a rather enduring way, they call him “Jim Bishop” and will tell me if I’m leaving for a synod meeting, “Say hi to Jim Bishop for me.” Good 8- and 10-year-old ecclesiology. One day as I was playing chess with Mia, 8, she pulled the bishops off the board. “This one is Jim,” she said. “Ok,” I replied. “Good to know.” “This one,” she continued, “What’s the new bishop’s name again?” “Elizabeth Eaton.” “Yeah, this one is Elizabeth. But don’t give her a hard time, she’s new.”

Good advice for us all. Geoff Sinibaldo New Canaan, Conn.

Spirited start to church school Ella, 2, selected a lovely red dress for her first day of church school. Her mother asked her what color her brother Levi should wear. She said, “Pen- tagram.” Confused, her mother asked what she meant. Ella replied, “I am

wearing pentagram (she meant Pentecost) red. I think Levi should too!” Kyle Olson Manhattan, Kan.

Liturgy listeners

One week the pastor told the congregation about the “Leaven Project,” saying “We are all leaven.” My granddaughter whispered to her mother in protest,

“Prayer does work. It’s Monday after Thanksgiving and we’re still here.”

“I’m not 11. I’m 4.” Another day when they were playing a game, Mom had to remind her she couldn’t win all the time. When she loses it would be nice if she held out her hand to her opponent and said, “Congratula- tions.” When our granddaughter finally lost she held our her hand, hesitated and then

blurted out, “Peace be with you.” John Wecker Astoria, Ore.

Needing money—and grace During adult Sunday school class, the pastor emphasized our need for God’s grace. An older gentleman mentioned that when he and his wife, Grace, ate at a restaurant the night before, he realized he didn’t have money. The pastor said, “Well, you certainly needed grace then, didn’t you?” The man replied, “Well I did have Grace, but she didn’t have any

money either.” Jim Resh

“You’d think God would’ve made turkeys with more than two drumsticks.” Richmond, Ind.
