More than 100 women theologians were among 15,000 participants gathered Aug. 27-Sept. 1 in Antsir- abe, Madagascar, for the National Women’s Gathering of the Malagasy Lutheran Church. The theologians, who continue to bring attention to the issue of women’s ordination, led Bible studies. The Malagasy Lutheran Church doesn’t ordain women. With no church building large enough to hold the gather- ing, women sat each day in a grassy field. Elaine Neuenfeldt, from the Lutheran World Federation’s Women in Church and Society desk, said the gathering was “powerful” and brought to mind “the biblical image of a multitude following Jesus and sitting on the grass.”

Muslims welcomed The same day the Winona [Minn.] Islamic Center was destroyed by fire, founder Ahmed El-Afandi sat at a table in Central Lutheran Church dis- cussing the welcome his community of faith had received. “[It’s] beyond description,” he told the Winona Daily News of Central’s decision to offer its worship space after the cen- ter was destroyed by fire Sept. 13. “It’s very big of them.” Central and First Congregational Church both offered space before the flames had even died down. “Let’s make [this] an opening-up for better relation- ships with our neighbors,” El-Afandi said. 
