Resurrection Lutheran’s congrega- tion benefits from the variety of cul- tures and music represented, includ- ing those of the choir in worship.

Resurrection Lutheran Church, Oakland, Calif.

For years, Resurrection had been all-but-invisible in its downtown location. Now largely comprised of recent immigrants from East Africa, the congregation is well-regarded and

Words that previously described this congregation: Invisible and shy, globally connected, waiting for visi- tors to come inside, a heart for justice, older commuter-members.

Words that describe this congre- gation now: Good at giving testi- monies, personally connected to the world, home to East African immi- grants, prevailing younger demo- graphic, well-known by neighbors.

What’s visible? Members are over- coming fears about their immigration status; a home-based women’s group

that bridges culture, age and other presumed differences; participation in a statewide immigration reform.

Important outcomes that may be invisible: Organizing methods match African immigrants’ understanding of God’s good news, entrepreneurial leaders, a rich worship life.

Surprises along the way: One-to- one conversations enable us to avoid conflict. When our programs are physically outside our church build- ings, people come.

Where congregation-based orga- nizing could lead: Cross-cultural dialogue (East Africans with Latinos and Latinas), leaders taking roles in wider community organizing efforts, more work on immigration reform.
