TECHNOLOGY NEWS 5.1 the Easy Way

SENNHEISER HAS unveiled its brand- new Esfera surround microphone system, which provides 5.1 surround sound from just two channels. The system consists of a stereo microphone, designed with Sennheiser’s RF condenser technology, and a 19in rack-mount processing unit that converts the stereo signal into a complete 5.1 signal – anywhere in the production workflow, whether in real time or during post production. Two radio-frequency condenser

microphones are at the heart of Esfera’s SPM 8000 stereo microphone. The microphones feature a low inherent

self-noise, ensuring that even the finest sound structures remain intact. They are inherently fully floating and balanced and do not require an additional balancing circuit or transformer to protect them from external interfering signals. The Esfera processing unit uses a special

algorithm to generate a full 5.1 surround signal with sampling rates of up to 96kHz. The processor software enables the user

to adjust the gain of the individual channels, modify the front and surround focus, determine the surround delay, adjust several filters with their cut-off frequencies, and set the compression, limiter and treble boost.

The input side of the SBP 8000 is fitted

with two analogue XLR-3 sockets with P48 phantom powering and two digital inputs for an AES3 signal. On the output side, the unit has six digital outputs (left, right, centre, LFE, surround left, surround right) for three AES3 signals. www.sennheiser.com

Calrec Announces New Console

CALREC AUDIO has launched Callisto, a brand new audio console for live broadcasters. Callisto is designed for professionals who need to produce creative broadcast audio easily, but may not require as many resources as the Apollo and Artemis consoles. “We’ve designed Callisto to keep the user interface simple and straightforward,” said Henry Goodman, Calrec’s head of sales. “Throughout the design process, we’ve kept the focus not just on features and capabilities, but on the totality of the user experience.” Users control the console via a 17in multitouch screen inspired

by familiar tablet technology, with a straightforward interface that uses established finger gestures to navigate the system. Callisto’s other large displays are fully configurable to display bus, output, and loudness meters, and feature dedicated metering, routing, and processing information per fader. The physical control surface is available in fixed 32- and 44-

fader configurations with a new streamlined layout where each channel strip has only the most essential controls, featuring a fader, two flexible control cells, and a dedicated gain pot. www.calrec.com
