London’s ExCeL centre will host PLASA this month

Pro Audio at PLASA As the first PLASA Show at London’s ExCeL draws nearer, we look at what’s on offer for the pro-audio professional.

THIS YEAR’S PLASA London will host a number of audio sessions as part of its Professional Development Programme. During the four days of free education, visitors will be given a look behind the scenes of a number of live shows and major events and venues.

The audio stream will cover

live and installed sound. Highlights in the AudioLab Theatre include ‘Touring Live Sound Meets Broadcast Audio’, which explores the areas of common approach as well as possible conflicts; ‘Live Sound Engineers Question Time’, whose guest panel includes Barry Bartlett (Ray Charles, James, Chaka Khan, Damon Albarn), and Rampton (Chase & Status, Basement Jaxx, The Libertines) among others; and ‘Do You Trust Acoustic

Models?’ presented by the Institute of Acoustics. Elsewhere, ‘Bringing Together AV, IT and Audio’, examines where pro-audio fits into the colliding worlds of AV and IT; and ‘How to Soundcheck!’ sees Jon Burton (FOH for The Prodigy and Bombay Bicycle Club) take the audience through a show day with a focus on the final soundcheck, exploring the common problems that occur, and examining ways of overcoming them. The Avolites Aftershow

Party, co-hosted by DiGiCo, Martin Audio and Amptown, returns to PLASA for 2013. Taking place on Monday 7 October from 20:00-02:00 at the TROXY club close to the ExCeL, the theme for this year’s fancy dress is Rock to Opera. Steve Warren, managing

director, Avolites, said: “PLASA London always provides not only a great exhibition and outstanding seminar programme, but also the very best in the equally important after-hours networking opportunities and entertainment. We have an exciting new venue for this year’s party, and we know people are going to love it!”

SHOWFLOOR First-time exhibitor Advanced Acoustics will be demonstrating its Silent Space Isolation Booths. Visitors will be able to experience the sound isolation that can be achieved with the isolation booths, all of which are built to order in the UK. Twelve standard sizes are available and the company is also able to produce custom specified booths.

Also making its show debut is DirectOut, which will launch four new MADI products at the show. The first in the line-up is the EXBOX.BLDS MADI auto- switcher. EXBOX.BLDS provides an automatic, inaudible changeover between two identical, synchronised MADI sources should one of them fail. A further three new

developments are additions to the extensive ANDIAMO series of converters. ANDIAMO.AES is an AES/MADI converter for 64 channels with a built-in routing matrix and the ANDIAMO.AES SRC version includes sample rate converters for the 16 AES inputs.

ANDIAMO 2.AD is a 32-channel MADI A/D converter and ANDIAMO

2.DA is a 32-channel MADI D/A converter. The units offer unidirectional conversion between analogue and MADI. Both units include two MADI ports for increased flexibility or redundancy. Focusrite will be

showcasing RedNet, its latest range of Dante-powered audio networking interfaces. RedNet 1 and RedNet 2 offer eight or 16 channels of line- level analogue in and out, with 24-bit A-D and D-A conversion. RedNet 3 interfaces a digital audio system and components to the Dante network via AES/EBU, S/PDIF and ADAT connections, while RedNet 4 adds eight of Focusrite’s next-generation remote controlled preamps/line inputs with two selectable DIs to the Dante
