SHOW PREVIEW IBC Impresses
With more visitors, a diverse conference programme, and numerous product launches, IBC2013 was busier than ever.
Almost 53,000 people passed through the doors of the RAI
IBC2013 WELCOMED a record number of attendees with almost 53,000 visitors passing through the doors of the RAI to visit more than 1,400 exhibiting companies and listen to 431 conference speakers.
The list of speakers at this
year’s event was impressively varied, ranging from the heads of major broadcasters and His Highness Prince Fahad al Saud, to the creator of Borgen and The Killing Morten Hesseldahl, and Indian superstar and veteran of 185 films Amitabh Bachchan. The IBC Leaders’ Summit attracted more than 140 CEOs and senior executives of the largest media businesses. This year the debates that took place behind closed doors fell under the theme ‘Please Adjust Your Set: Retuning Your Strategy for the Connected Era’, and discussed how the industry has to refocus its strategy to seize new opportunities. IBC also focused on those just entering the industry, with its Rising Stars programme giving young professionals the chance to attend IBC. “Thanks to everyone who has exhibited and visited IBC2013,” said Michael Crimp, IBC CEO. “We are continually evolving what we offer, to reflect the changes in our industry. That we continue to attract this sort of number of attendees shows that we remain relevant right across

the industry, right around the world.” “Our visitors span from CEOs at our Leaders’ Summit to the newest entrants to the business in the Rising Stars programme,” he continued. “We are proud to be the place where the whole industry comes together each year.”
EXHIBITION Presented to the public for the first time, the new Esfera surround microphone system from Sennheiser provides 5.1 surround sound from just two channels, making complicated surround mic installations a thing of the past. The system includes a high-quality stereo microphone and a 19in rack- mount processing unit that converts the stereo signal into a complete 5.1 signal, whether in real time or during post production. It is due for release in March 2014. BroaMan’s control software, which is a diagnostic tool for the control and monitoring of all BroaMan units, based on the same architecture as Optocore’s 2.21 audio control software, made its world debut. It works with all Optocore devices and is compatible with features well-known from that platform including audio matrix, level control and monitoring, network supervision, storage and recall of the configuration set-up to and from PC hard disk, as well as real-time level display of the individual channels.

which include 16 stereo auxs, 32 stereo tracks, and the same Hydra network capabilities that are on all Calrec consoles. Callisto will be in full production around Q1, 2014. Lawo’s V_pro8 video
processor, which was developed for the live editing of video streams and routing, was presented at IBC. This 1U device offers a number of high-end features such as frame synchronisation, format conversion, colour correction, and audio de-embedding and metering. In other news, Lawo has appointed Gearhouse Broadcast as the sole UK and Ireland approved dealer for its video products. Riedel Communications and
The launch of Avid’s S6 was a highlight of the show Products from Mogami and
Wohler were shown by HHB including the new Mogami LAN cable, which lies flat on the floor with other cables in a compact space rather than remaining rigid like most LAN cables. Also new was Wohler’s version 7 software, which provides loudness functionality for the AMP2- 16V-M audio and video monitor; this free download includes a loudness monitoring screen for indication of reference level, digital readout for loudness (LKFS or LUFS), as well as maximum true peak, maximum loudness and maximum program loudness. Germany’s Sommer Cable
showcased a fully reworked and unified MonoCAT cable family. The different hybrid cables all contain network lines complemented by signal or power supply elements, allowing connections to be made to sound, lighting or video control desks using only one cable and with only one plug-in procedure. The cable family features a reworked internal Cat7 construction in SFTP with a line gauge of
0.22sqmm that allows for improved transmission paths, potentially providing trouble- free transmission of signals based on gigabit Ethernet over distances up to 100m. At the same time, the power wires have a cross-sectional area of 2.5sqmm to avoid problems with longer distances.
UNDER CONTROL New Avid products launched at IBC included the S6, a modular control surface for sound mixing, recording, and editing. The technology is built on the same as that used for Avid’s ICON and System 5 product families. It will be available in Q4. Calrec was presenting
Callisto, its new compact broadcast console. The unit benefits from 180 channel resources, all of which can be pulled to make surround, stereo or mono channels without any loss of processing: its four mains and eight groups can all be 5.1 at the same time, and because every channel has everything in it, there is no trade off. Callisto comes in 32- and 44-fader frames, both of
Studer announced a joint development to provide Studer customers with a highly scalable audio routing system offering I/O capacities in excess of 10,000 x 10,000 inputs and outputs, providing direct integration with Riedel’s MediorNet system over Studer’s new proprietary A- Link digital interface. A-Link is a point-to-point topology similar to MADI, but significantly quicker, and with a potential capacity of 1,500 channels per connection. The two companies joined forces to develop A-Link interface cards for MediorNet and Studer Vista and OnAir DSP engines, and as a result, a single MediorNet 2U box fitted with six A-Link cards can deliver a matrix of 4,608 x 4,608 inputs and outputs, connected to A-Link cards in Studer’s SCore Live DSP systems using optical cables. Schoeps launched V4 U, a
new studio mic. Through a 33mm beveled collar, the capsule gains certain large- diaphragm-like behaviours without losing the technical advantages of its small- diaphragm construction. Its frequency response is even up to 20kHz, Schoeps insists; and it also benefits from a flat diffuse field curve. In addition, transparency is achieved through its polar diagram, with a narrow pickup pattern at high frequencies. IBC2014 will return to the
RAI in Amsterdam between 11 and 16 September.
