TECHNOLOGY NEWS TC Electronic UpCon

THE TC ELECTRONIC UpCon is a cinema-quality up-converter for 5.1 HD TV broadcast, which combines an up-conversion and downmix processor in a single, high-density rack unit. UpCon is based on TC’s UnWrap HD algorithm and shares its ultra-low latency, overkill processing resolution, and sound quality. It offers the same expandability as DB6 Multi and comes with one 3G SDI stream standard, but can be expanded with one or two optional Transmission 3G cards for a maximum of three simultaneous SDI streams. The hardware is also based on TC’s DB6 platform and UpCon offers the same extended control possibilities. Dual low-noise fans, dual fuses, and dual power inlets are also provided for feeding the unit from two independent power sources for failsafe redundancy. www.tcelectronic.com

Genelec Grows SAM Monitor Series

THE LATEST additions to Genelec’s SAM (Smart Active Monitor) range, the 1237A/1238A, are three-way SAM monitors designed to adapt to control rooms in broadcasting, post, and music production by tuning the frequency response to compensate for acoustical room influences and to achieve perfect alignment of volume levels at the listening position. Both monitors can be either freestanding or flush-mounted. The flush versions benefit from a powerful new RAM-L amplifier that can also be attached to the loudspeaker cabinet when the monitor is free standing. “Since we launched SAM at last year’s IBC we’ve been hard

at work on adding larger monitors to the range and the 1237A and 1238A are the result. We’ve developed these new monitors in response to the changing nature of broadcast and post-production workspaces; basically, with 1237A and 1238A you can achieve perfect monitor performance, whatever your environment,” said Lars-Olof Janflod, marketing and PR director at Genelec. “The SAM features ensure that these monitors adapt to their environment and are perfectly at home wherever they are installed.” www.genelec.com

VERTIGO SOUND'S VSP-2 dual-channel microphone preamp delivers a big sound full of character.

The German manufacturer has developed a brand new twin op-amp circuit named OPA 1976, which is combined with Jensens JT-16 transformers. This combination allows the OPA 1976 to be driven quite hard, producing a warm and open sound. Delivering up to 72dB of gain, the Vertigo

Sound VSP-2 offers a great deal of control with a ten position Grayhill rotary switch Gain control working in 6dB increments and a finer Gain Trim ranging from

0 to 6dB. DI Inputs are also included with their inputs connecting directly into the twin op-amps bypassing the transformer for true DI operation. Additional features include a 12dB/oct hi-pass filter with 80Hz or 120Hz selectable frequencies, 48V phantom power, 20dB Pad, and polarity reversal switch all selected via high-quality toggle switches. The Vertigo Sound VSP-2 is said to be

equally at ease on vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, bass, and drums, adding weight, warmth and openness. www.kmraudio.com
