The model climbed away cleanly with the Smoothies, but suddenly pulled up and spun in—eliminated. Gremlins had struck again in the races! FAC mass launch rules allow adding or removing of ballast to the model between mass launch heats, but the contest- ant cannot test glide the model once the event has begun.

Keeping things interesting, a light rain had begun to fall as a large group of WWII mass launch contestants and their mechan- ics gathered in the field. Nearing the end of the meet, there was no time left to resched- ule; the event would proceed. As the rain fell more steadily, flyers got creative in their at- tempts to keep their model’s tissue covering from becoming soaked. By the end of the sec- ond heat, these efforts proved futile and shifting centers of gravity began to take their toll. Despite the conditions, the top three finishers averaged flights between 70 and 100 seconds in duration.

Most flyers by this time had recorded their final official flights and the 2013 FAC Non-Nats had begun to draw to a close. It

should be noted that the Earl Stahl Com- memorative event was run on Saturday to honor the legacy of one of the greatest freeflight scale, sport and competition de- signers of our time.

Earl Stahl had passed away some months earlier in November, 2012 and he regularly attended both the FAC Nationals and Non- Nats meets over the years. One of the Fly- ing Aces Club’s most coveted awards—the Earl Stahl Award for FAC Scale models— carries forward his legacy. Dave Mitchell got a bit of time away from his CD duties to fly and win this event with his beautiful Stahl Stinson O-49.

The meet closed late Saturday afternoon

with an on-field awards ceremony that in- cluded a lighthearted presentation of the Blue Max medal to Detroit Cloudbuster fly- er, Winn Moore, for achieving sixteen victo- ries in Flying Aces contests. Winn added two more victories, or kanones, to his tally at the 2013 Non-Nats with first places in Embryo Endurance flying his Debut, and in No-Cal profile scale with his Dayton-Wright Racer.

An excellent chicken barbeque dinner was

served at the field in the HAG Visitor’s Cen- ter following the awards ceremony. Many simply returned with their meal to the flightline and continued to sport fly into the evening with their friends in what has be- come a Geneseo Nats and Non-Nats tradi- tion. These folks just love to fly freeflight model airplanes, whether the stopwatch is ticking or not!

If this sounds like fun to you, consider vis- iting the official FAC website at www.flying acesclub.com and joining the club. It’s easier than ever to join online and you’ll receive one of the best freeflight scale and sport newsletters around, the Flying Aces Club News. You’ll also find a contest calendar on the FAC website and with any luck a local club in your area that would love to have a new member. If you do join, consider taking a youngster along with you when you go to a meet. It’s up to us older modelers to expose the next gener- ation to our wonderful hobby and the joy of freeflight.
