Microaces Curtiss P-6E Hawk
Microaces Ltd has released the Curtiss P-6E Hawk. It’s the first biplane kit they have designed. The idea to create a biplane kit came from the members of
RCGroups.com, who voted the P-6E as the aircraft they most wanted to see crafted into a Microaces kit. The kit retains all of the component features of a Microaces kit, including the innovative receiver clip-in, clip-out system designed for the Spektrum AR6400 and 6400L type receivers and their successors, the AR6410 and 6410L. The direct link micro servo aileron control and the perky brushless motor setup are also retained, but the kit also includes some new features and components that really make this kit stand out at this diminutive scale. The material that forms the external covering of the aircraft has been lightened. The biplane struts and other structural parts are laser cut from 1mm plywood, and the Depron aero parts, which form the internal airframe, are the first to be laser cut in a Microaces kit.
With all Microaces kits, the emphasis is on the enjoyment and satisfaction of the build almost as much as the flying. The Curtiss includes over 150 components that assemble with the guidance of a clear but detailed step-by-step manual that brings the kit together in around six to eight hours. Most of the parts are prepared for assembly with very little sanding or cutting required during the build. This means that construction can take place at dining tables, breakfast bars or even in front of the TV on a tray without upsetting loved ones!
A standard 4-channel setup on this 16-inch wingspan aircraft makes the P-6E Hawk very maneuvrable. Its large rudder and elevator surfaces provide great authority and the ailerons, with a pushrod setup that mimics the original Curtiss design, give barrel rolls a really authentic feel. The GWS 5030 prop, turned by the Microaces standard 5g brushless motor, gives plenty of thrust to loop, stall turn and perform many other aerobatics expected of a 1930s pursuit biplane. It is certainly happy enough outdoors in wind of up to 5 knots but is also slow enough to perform well indoors in medium sized venues. A video of the Curtiss P-6E Hawk in flight can be viewed on the Microaces Youtube Channel.
The new P-6E kit is available to order from the Microaces website with a very reasonable worldwide delivery service. It is available as a Standard Kit or as a Deluxe Kit, which includes the brushless motor and speed controller. Check the Microaces website for pricing.
