I want to thank you for including the Top Gun rubber powered model competition re- port by Bob Curry in the July 2013 issue. Of course, thanks to Bob and son, Sean, for doing the reporting and picture taking. This was a really fun time again. Dave Platt has hosted the early morning event in years past and we’re looking forward to next year with maybe three morning launches to entice even more participants. Among the pressures of the premiere scale R/C airplane and modeler competition, this was a won- derful return to our modeling roots. Surprisingly to me, after the joy of build- ing the models, the inevitable flying of these things brought back a myriad of questions about how we “used to do it”. We all had a lot of fun hangar flying with many conversa- tions trying to remember how we trimmed these things way back when. Personally, I don’t think I ever built a stick and tissue model as a kid that flew as good as a 25-cent rubber band sheet balsa model! I don’t think I’m alone wishing for a basic tutorial for an old guy (when did that hap- pen?) about the things that the FAC guys (I’m a member) take for granted. Is there a possible article opportunity that would re- view the trimming process? How about winding the motors; what motors to use where; how many turns? I’ve got an old tin of lube, is it needed? We pretty much know how to build, and maybe even cover, but what’s this new fangled Esaki tissue I’ve read about? Good info in the FAC newslet- ters, but everybody seems to assume we’re up the fundamentals. FLYINGMODELS is the modeler’s magazine. Thank you for sticking to it.

Righter 2-GS-17 engine restored I very much enjoyed John Hunton and John E. Bird’s article on the Radioplane OQ-2A drone in FMOct. 2012.


I am a contributing member of the Air- craft Engine Historical Society (www.engine


history.org) and as of early July, 2013, re- stored a derelict Righter 2-GS-17 engine to running condition. The 2-GS-17 is the en- gine used in the OQ-2A: 6 hp @ 3800 rpm, 277cc, contra-rotating, 26-inch diameter props. I ran the engine at Oshkosh AirVen- ture this year, and at the Indiana Warbird Campaign in Muncie over Labor Day week- end. Runs great, loud as can be, and a whole lot of fun.
