B&R Product of the Month Automation PC 910 with integrated UPS card

UK gear manufacturer opens its doors in India

DRIVEN BY LOCAL demand, pri- marily in the burgeoning aerospace sector, precision gear manufacturer Microprecision has officially opened its first manufacturing plant in India - Microprecision Solutions. Located in the fast paced and popular technology centre of Bangalore, Microprecision offi- cially opened the doors to its new 20,000ft2 of last year

Keen to allay any thoughts of moving production from the UK, the company sees the venture as a

true expansion as Terry Grubb UK MD of Microprecision explained, “The design technology for our precision gear components is still centred in the UK, as are many design operations in the aerospace and automotive industries. It made commercial sense however, for us to look at emerging markets for growth and also to take the opportunity to develop a produc- tion facility for our higher volume products, something that we have always wanted to do.” www.microprecision.co.uk

Intelligent safeguard against power out- ages and fluctuations: For its Automation PC 910, B&R offers a UPS solution that saves both space and costs. Should the external power sup- ply fail, the UPS ensures that data is backed-up safely and that programs are closed properly to avoid losing unsaved data. UPS as an insert card saves space and

UK robot sales on the increase

DESPITE SLOWER SALES of robots in quarter one compared to an outstanding record year last year, robot sales for quarter two of 2013 have accelerated and almost matched the level for the entire year of 2011. However, despite this increase, there was still a word of caution from Mike Wilson, British Automation and Robot Association chairman, who added, “Whilst we welcome the level of robot orders from the auto- motive sector, largely driven by product demand in global emerg- ing markets, it is an ongoing con- cern that some sectors are still not understanding the potential impli- cations of not automating. “Other countries such as China,

Germany and most of the major European manufacturing nations - even countries that are not original equipment manufacturers - are investing heavily in automation to create competitive advantage. Part of the problem in the UK is a short term approach and the perception that the payback period is consid- erably longer than it often is.” The government’s recent drive to automate UK manufacturing under the Automating Manufacturing Programme is near- ing completion. According to Grant Collier, head of marketing for the PPMA Group of Associations, managing the pro- gramme, “This has been a tremen- dous success with over 360 manufacturers around the UK

costs:What sets an online UPS apart from a standby UPS is that it runs constantly whenever the PC is on and is therefore able to compensate for power fluctuations in addition to outages. As an insert card, the UPS solution from B&R is especially conve- nient. Installed directly in the PC, it requires neither housing nor cable connections. This lowers costs and frees up cabinet space, while also reducing power loss. Two sizes available: 2.2 or 4.5 Ah: The UPS card is available in two sizes. The smaller card, with a charging current of 2.2Ah, is sufficient for the most common configurations of B&R's customisable industrial PC. For high performance configurations with extensive options and mul- tiple insert cards, the larger 4.5Ah card is recommended. The larg- er card also has a wider temperature range and a long service life. Depending on the system configuration, the UPS cards can bridge outages of up to one hour.
