ABB wins $27m offshore automation contract Compressor technology rewarded
ABB HAS WON an order from Statoil for the upgrade of safety and automation systems at the Heimdal plat- form in the North Sea, off the coast of Norway. ABB’s scope comprises a new human machine interface (HMI) for the control system, control room modifications, simulator, fire and gas detectors, integration of telecommunication in the control
room and information management systems (IMS). Erik Holsten, manager of ABB’s Process Automation division in Norway, commented, “ABB’s maintenance and modification service solu- tions extend the life span of installations that have been in operations for a significant amount of time.” The Heimdal platform will have ABB’s modern 800xA Extended Automation platform as the main control system, adapted to comply with Statoil's guidelines for workstations layout and design of process graphic. According to the agreement, ABB will have the complete engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) responsibility. The Heimdal field is primarily a hub in the cen- tral North Sea for the processing and distribution of gas. The platform receives gas from the Huldra, Oseberg, Skirne and Vale fields and exports it via Vesterled or Statpipe pipelines for processing.

IN RESPONSE TO growing security risks to control systems due to growing cyber security threats, Rockwell Automation has launched a new initiative to help automation and IT professionals more effec- tively secure their industrial processes with a combi- nation of control system design and best practices, contemporary technologies and professional services. “The rapidly evolving nature of the industrial security landscape makes it critical that today’s manufacturers view security as an ongoing business imperative, rather than a one-time investment event,” said Sujeet Chand, senior vice president and chief technology officer, Rockwell Automation. “A more secure network infrastructure will allow manufacturers to deploy contemporary technologies and emerging solutions, like mobility, virtualisation and cloud computing, while still performing mis- sion critical automation functions.”
New industrial security initiative introduced by Rockwell industrial security solutions.
The initiative from Rockwell Automation is based on a multi-layer network design approach that com- bines resiliency in the infrastructure with security enabled, end-point devices to help manufacturers establish a sustainable security culture, conduct comprehensive security assessments, and deploy a robust security infrastructure across both automa- tion and industrial IT assets. ATLAS COPCO’S GA VSD+ compressor has scooped the company’s Environmental Award for 2012. Bert Derom, product manager in Belgium (pictured receiving the award - above right), and his project team at the Industrial Air Division in Compressor Technique in Antwerp, won the award which includes €5,800 for use toward an envi- ronmental initiative or project. The greatest innovation with the GA VSD+ is the integration of the interior oil cooled per- manent magnet motor with the compressor element, creating a smaller, lighter, quieter and more efficient machine. “This compressor is a huge leap forward in innovation and will benefit both our customers and the environment,” said Andrew Walker, president of the Atlas Copco Compressor Technique Service division.
