WHILE HOSTING a Holiday Vacations Canadi- an Rockies & British Columbia by Rail tour re- cently, I was idly passing time watching the scenic splendor roll by outside my window as the Rocky Mountaineer traveled from Prince George to Quesnel. The tour director ap- proached from behind and whispered, “There’s someone, not with the tour, who wants to speak with you. Do you mind the interrup- tion?” My instinct brought to mind, “Now what did I do?” My reply, instead, was “Of course not.” What a pleasant turn of events.

Gold Leaf features the two- story dome cars that hold 64 passengers up top and seats 32 of them below in each of two servings of breakfast and lunch on board. The meals are prepared fresh to order. Ear- lier in the day I’d talked with the train’s manager, Wade Bush, and got a quick tour of the kitchens between breakfast and lunch. A
