Railroad in Mauch Chuck (since 1954, Jim Thorpe), Penn. This historic coal-hauling railroad, only the second railroad built in the United States when opened in 1827 — two years before the first steam locomotive appeared in America, is also credited with being the inspiration for the roller coaster. Today a rail trail, the 18-mile Summit Hill- to-Jim Thorpe Switchback Railroad Trail, it certainly has the physical characteristics displayed in the film. However . . .

. . . A Mystery Emerges Resolute fact-checker that I am, I shared the DVD with John Drury, president of the Switchback Gravity Railroad Foundation and of the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cul- tural Center, just to be sure at least some of the footage was shot there. His terse reply: “I can assure you that the film is not related to the Switchback Gravity Railroad.” A re- sulting closer study of the details of the film did not yield a definite answer as to the source of the footage. The consensus is that perhaps the 1908 and/or 1914 versions of the film had included Switchback footage which was cut before the 1921 film was re- leased. Or, perhaps it was in some versions of the 1921 film but not others. This is, after all, the New Zealand release, not the Amer- ican release. So here’s the deal. If none of the scenes are from Mauch Chunk/Jim Thorpe, where are they from? Thoughtful readers, if you secure a copy of this DVD, and can identify any or all of the railroads on which the run- away train(s) were filmed, I welcome hear- ing from you, and will share your insights with others.
One More Thing
Because these films were released between 1914 and 1929, it should not surprise you to learn there is other interesting railroad footage therein. The opening 1:15 minutes of the six-minute Happy-Go-Luckies (1923), a cartoon, features a carefree pair — a cat and a dog — riding the rails as hobos en route to a pet beauty contest. A one-minute “pre- view” of a forthcoming John Ford feature ti- tled Strong Boy (1929), about a baggage handler’s affection for an engineer’s daugh- ter, entices, but the notes point out that the film itself is lost to time. And I just knew a 22-minute comedy titled Andy’s Stump Speech (Andy being a central figure in the then-popular comic strip The Gumps), re- leased in the heat of the 1924 U. S. presiden- tial election, would have to have some train footage. I wasn’t disappointed. About mid- way, there is a three-minute scene devoted to Andy and his family racing to the depot in a horse-drawn wagon so he can give a speech. They come alongside the train, a speeding ATSF heavyweight consist being led by 4-8-4 No. 3706, and race it to a grade crossing. Today’s sensibilities are surprised to see the rig try to run the crossing gates, with a result that would, under normal cir- cumstances, be fatal to the four family mem- bers. Instead, they are merely whisked along on the pilot to the station. And lest you be- lieve railroads worked efficiently in the “Golden Age,” when Andy gets to town — the depot sign says “Greenwich,” he wonders why no one is at the depot to hear his speech. A lad waiting nearby shrugs and observes, “The train got in on time.” The audience no doubt saw that as a laugh line.
