ciation to help restore the PCC’s while educating the public about the history of streetcar transit. MTS formed San Diego Vintage Trolley, Inc., as a sepa- rate non-profit subsidiary to coordinate efforts to bring vintage trolleys back to the streets of San Diego. Several PCC cars are in the collec- tion, with a single car currently in serv- ice. The operational PCC is former San Francisco Muni number 1122, now numbered San Diego 529 (one slot higher than the city’s original cars). The car is painted in San Diego colors of green, cream, and plum. There are a few modern conveniences; the front trolley pole has been replaced by a pan- tograph, although the back pole re- mains even though it is not used. A wheelchair lift was also added. The restoration, performed by volunteers with the San Diego Electric Railway Association, took five years and thou- sands of man hours. The $850,000 needed for the full restoration of 529 was raised by SDVTI.
