some rare Alcos and got to explore some new territory with friends... What could be bet- ter? Well, the nearby Arcade & Attica is back in steam and the fall colors are starting to emerge... —O.M.V.

Just In Case...

So Steve is about to leave for Alaska to take part in the 2013 NRHS National Conven- tion. That’s all well and good, but I don’t have any real guarantees that Steve will ac- tually return. [What? –S.B.] I mean, what if a polar bear mistakes him for a penguin? [There are no penguins in Alaska. –S.B.] So since Steve will be gone for a few weeks, I figure I’d take this time to throw out some ideas on feature articles I’d like to help get developed for publication in this magazine. [I’m standing right here, you know. –S.B.] First of all, I’m a sucker for anything hav- ing to do with F-units, past or present, freight or passenger. Know any local opera- tions that continue to use cab units in regu- lar service? Any museums preserving rare examples for operation or display? Second, you can always hit the bullseye on

my back with anything from one of the or- ange railroads. You know, the Rio Grande, the Western Pacific, or the Milwaukee Road. Triple word score if you have photos of the Rio Grande Zephyr, the California Zephyr, or anything from Lines West. I also have a soft spot for Montana Rail Link and the Spokane, Portland & Seattle. Third, I’d like to give a little love to some

of the old time regional roads that just don’t seem to get a lot of press. That includes lines like the Monon, the Louisville & Nashville, and the Frisco. Did I mention the Monon?

That said, knowing what some of those old routes are up to today would be welcome as well. The new regionals are like a moving target with ever-changing locomotive rosters and route acquisitions. Fourth, we never shy away from a good commuter or transit piece. What’s more, there are so many new operations starting up and expanding, it’s hard to keep track. Minnesota’s NorthStar, Utah’s FrontRunner, and New Mexico’s RailRunner are all great examples. So is the expansion of Houston’s METRO, and the construction of new street- car lines in Cincinnati and Washington, D.C. Know of any others? Finally, and I’m thinking this is a long

shot, but if anyone wanted to send in a fea- ture about the old Erie Western, I don’t think we’d say no. Well, that just about sums it up. If you

want to pitch a story idea to us, you can reach us through our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/railfanmag or on our web site at www.railfan.com/contact. Listen, let’s just keep this between us, okay? And lets hope Steve stays away from the polar bears. [Thanks. –S.B.]

North To Alaska

As Otto mentioned above, this issue is head- ing for press while I’m in Alaska. The first order of business when I get back may be to find a new associate editor.... As always, we have some bonus content for digital readers beginning on page 58. You can add a digital subscription to your current print sub for a mere $10.00 a year. Call the office to set up your digital edi- tion! — S.B.
