Number 529 was built by St. Louis in 1946 and ran in San Francisco until 1982. It and two others were purchased in 2005 from a private collection that languished for many years at South Lake Tahoe, Calif. Several additional PCC cars are waiting in the wings. Newark City Subway/NJ Transit num- ber 10 is undergoing mechanical work at Rockhill Trolley Museum in Penn- sylvania before heading west. San Diego has also acquired two former SEPTA cars, numbers 2186 and 2785.

Current Operations

Heritage operations started in the summer of 2011 and proved extremely popular, especially with tourists. The car runs clockwise starting at the 12th and Imperial Transit Center, past the ballpark

and convention center to

America Plaza, then east on C Street before returning to Imperial. A trip around the 2.7-mile loop takes 30 min- utes and runs on weekends, holidays and Tuesdays and Thursdays from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. Numerous photo angles exist as the car makes the loop, including a long straight away near the convention cen- ter, and at the Santa Fe depot. There are plenty of red MTS streetcars to pho- tograph while awaiting the vintage trolley, as well as Amtrak California, Coaster commuter and BNSF freights. San Diego is a great place to visit,

with temperatures in the 80s nearly year round and very few cloudy days. There are plenty of family activities nearby as well, including the world renowned zoo, Sea World and U.S.S. Midway Museum. So take a break from the waterfront and other attractions and spend some time with the San Diego vintage trolley.

ABOVE: San Diego PCC 529 rounds the curve into the Seaport Village station. From here, it's a short walk to the waterfront where restau- rants and maritime attractions can be found. LEFT: Red cars of the San Diego Trolley passes the Santa Fe depot downtown. Passengers can transfer between several streetcar lines here, as well as Amtrak California and Coaster com- muter lines. The historic depot opened in 1915 to welcome visitors to the Panama-California Exposition.
