Richard Jay Corman, 1955-2013

58-YEAR OLD RAIL ENTREPRENEUR Richard .J. “Rick” Corman (inset) lost his long battle with multiple myeloma on August 23 while at home in Nicholasville, Ky. When first diagnosed with the blood can- cer in 2001, his life expectancy was just three years. Corman started R.J. Corman Railroad Group while he was in high

school. It now operates short line railroads in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Tennessee, Ohio, and West Virginia, a signal division, a rail construction division, track material sales, two dinner trains, genset lo- comotive builder RailPower, and derailment clearing services (the Storm Team). His first railroad was established on the CSX, former Louisville

& Nashville, Bardstown (Ky.) Branch in 1987. The company’s bright red color scheme, which graces locomotives, cars, trucks, and helicopters, is based on Corman’s first pickup truck — a red one, of course. His last new project was the Lexington Dinner Train (above), which made its first run on August 14. The train runs out of the “Glass House” in Lexington , originally built to store and dis- play 2-10-2 No. 2008, which is expected to make a last run to the Mid- way (Ky.) Fall Festival on September 22 and 23, after which it will need its five-year inspection. The locomotive was briefly operated in late July, likely a last opportunity for the boss to see it in action.

No. 70 (ex-1201) had been painted in a Caterpillar-yellow version of the EMD demo paint scheme (see RAILNEWS December 2012). By the time you read this, the big EMD’s should be covering A&M’s day and night road jobs. Ten Alco Centurys will remain in local and yard service.
