RTP launches PP compounds with cellulose reinforcement

RTP Company has launched a new range of cellulose fi bre reinforced polypropylene compounds based on Weyer- haeuser’s Thrive renewable fi bres which are extracted from trees grown in sustain- ably managed forests. Cellulose fi bres can

increase the strength, stiffness and thermal performance of PP compounds, making them suitable for structural applications. Compared to other natural fi bres and fi llers such as wood, hemp, sisal or wheat straw, cellulose fi bres

are said to provide higher levels of strength and stiff- ness, consistent colour, superior processability, low odour, and a reliable supply. “Cellulose fi bre reinforced

PP compounds overcome many of the obstacles that have hindered the adoption of bio-based resins and natural fi bre compounds,” said Will Taber, business manager for emerging technologies at RTP. The company is highlighting

the advantages of cellulose fi bres compared to glass fi bre reinforcements for PP. Their

renewable content helps to meet sustainability objectives, while specifi c gravity reduc- tions of 6-9% are achieved for compounds with comparable loadings. In addition, average cycle time reductions of up to 30% can be achieved for medium to thick walled parts, along with reduced tool wear. Compared to unreinforced PP, a homopolymer PP with 20% cellulose fi bre reinforce- ment offers a 38% increase in tensile strength, a 75% boost in fl exural modulus, and a 60°F rise in heat defl ection at
