Designer demonstrates pedal-powered extruder

Victor Monserrate, a product designer from Puerto Rico, has developed a pedal-powered plastics recycling machine as

part of his studies at the Royal College of Art in London, UK. Called The Ingenio, the customised bicycle turns

discarded plastic containers into fi bres and threads that can be used to make chairs and baskets. The idea is that the low-cost device would be used to add value to recycled plastic in developing countries. Monserrate’s recycling

bicycle includes a pedal-pow- ered shredder to chop up the reclaimed bottles, plus a pedal-powered extruder heated by two toaster ele- ments. The system is shown in action during this BBC news report: http://bit.ly/BBCpedal.  www.vmdesign.org
