event preview | Compounding World Forum 2013

From top to bottom: Anis Tebib, Dr Martin Klatt, Christophe Chambonnet and Dean Elliott

World (http://bit.ly/ClioPP). The tailgate door is produced in three main parts using three different PP compounds from Styron’s Inspire range, including talc-fi lled and long-glass-fi bre-reinforced grades. Tebib will discuss the development and implementation of this innovative application, which offers signifi cant weight savings, styling freedom and functional integration. Dr Martin Klatt, senior manager research at BASF in Germany, will provide a valuable overview of adding fl ame retardancy to engineering plastics. He has spoken on this subject at AMI’s focused conferences on fl ame retard- ants in Europe and the USA, and his presentations are very well received by audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. BASF produces both engineering plastics compounds and fl ame retardant additives, so Dr Klatt is perfectly positioned to address the latest requirements and technologies in this fast changing sector of the industry, which is responding to sustainability and safety issues with new formulations.

Improving sustainability

The fi nal session of the fi rst day of the Compounding World Forum will focus on the hot topic of improving sustainability. Kimberly Williamson, corporate process manager at Techmer PM, will start the session with a talk entitled ‘A profi table path to sustainable com- pounding’. The company, which is a major producer of masterbatches and engineering plastics compounds, has taken a very proactive approach to improving the sustainability of its

manufacturing operations, which Williamson will discuss in detail.

As we reported in the April edition of Compounding

World (http://bit.ly/TechmerPM), Techmer PM’s initiatives in this area have not only boosted its green credentials, they have also increased its profi tability in a number of signifi cant ways. Christophe Chambonnet is based in Canada and is

global manager for Woodforce at Sonae Industria, a leading international producer of wood-based panels. Woodforce is the company’s engineered wood fi bre

product for reinforcing plastics, and it has just been launched in America (see last month’s Compounding World for details – http://bit.ly/Sonae).

Produced on an industrial scale in a

new 130,000 tonnes/year plant, Woodforce is made of densifi ed wood fi bres formed into easy-to-handle dice-sized cubes that simplify feeding into compounding

extruders and help to retain fi bre length. The high aspect ratio of the natural fi bres and their low density makes them an attractive alternative to glass fi bres, something that Chambonnet will discuss in detail in his presentation.

Dean Elliot, lab manager at Entek

Extruders, will give the fi nal paper on the fi rst day of the conference, covering the hot topic of compounding bio-based plastics and natural fi bres.

Entek is a leading manufacturer of twin-screw compounding extruders and has particular experience in processing sensitive and hard-to-handle bioplastics and natural fi bres. In recent years, a large proportion of the trials carried out in its laboratory have involved a wide variety of bio-based polymers and reinforcements, so Elliott is particularly well placed to discuss the optimised processing of such materials.

The presentations that we have lined

up for the second day of the event, including sessions on getting the most from your compounding line, will be previewed in next month’s issue.

More information The Compounding World Forum is

sponsored by ExxonMobil/Vistamaxx, ICMA San Giorgio and Pelletron. In addition to the high-level conference sessions, it will include an exhibition area for networking

during the refreshment breaks and the evening cocktail reception.
