AFS NEWS AFS Brings Foundry in a Box


to Elizabeth, Ill. The American Foundry Society’s Leo Baran, direc- tor of membership services, demonstrated the Foundry in a Box kit on July 20, as part of a community outreach program put on by the Planetary Studies Foundation in Elizabeth, Ill. Baran, a longtime member of the founda- tion, tied together space, science and local history in his metalcasting demonstration. Close to 30 people were in attendance for the event,


including AFS Corporate Member Eric Einsweiler, Lemfco Inc., Galena, Ill. Baran gave a presentation detailing how metalcasting touches our everyday lives. Einsweiler added to the presentation by offering a history of the metalcasting industry in the area in addition to answering questions. Attendees were encouraged to participate by making a mold or pouring liquid tin into the mold. Te event, held on the grounds of the historic 1876 Banwarth House & Museum, concluded with a tour of the home. AFS continuously works throughout various com-

AFS Institute to Offer


Ergonomics Workshop Te American Foundry Society and its Institute will offer


a new Ergonomics Workshop at the society’s headquarters on Wednesday, Sept. 18. Institute courses are being devel- oped to better align with adult learning behaviors. Te course will cover the use of ergonomic principles to


recognize, evaluate and control workplace conditions that cause or contribute to employee safety and productivity issues. Te course will define ergonomics and its three components—work physiology, anthropometry and musculoskeletal disorders— and common risk factors such as vibration and temperature. Participants who attend this course will leave with the knowl- edge necessary to initiate or improve on existing ergonomics programs that can control health and performance problems.
