AUSTRALIA
FALLING Minus Adams, Aussies suffer worst finish since 1993
This was supposed to Jen Adams’ swan song. But with the best player in the world sidelined by injury, Australia got an unpleasant glimpse at its future without her. Adams, 33, tore her ACL in training camp just days before the World Cup, and the Australians never recovered. Losses to Canada in the round robin and semifinals meant Australia would settle for bronze, its worst finish since 1993.
Coach Max Madonia, who led the Australians to the gold medal in 2005, said Adams’ absence had an emotional impact. “Jen is just an entity outside of everything. The residual of that loss is still here today,” he said after the 11-7 semifinal loss. “Is that an excuse? Absolutely not. It’s not about one person. Our inability to connect through the spine of the field, our stick skills and our shooting weren’t on point. I’m really sad for the girls.”
Adams would not rule out returning in 2017. “There
would have
been a time that I might have
said this was my last time,” she said. “But prior to all this
happening, I was given the advice to never go into something with the assumption that it would be my last one, and I had really adopted that for this tournament. Right now, we get surgery, and we get rehab. We’ll just see how it feels in the future.” Australia hopes it feels better than bronze.
