Many players I watch tend to make things difficult for themselves. They play nicely off the tee, hit an average second shot and leave themselves anything from 1 foot to 50 yards off the green.

Play It Sensible To Get The Job Done If the answer is no, ask ‘Can I

chip this?’

I believe in the hierarchy of misses. This states that a bad putt will usually go closer than a bad chip and a bad chip will usually go closer than a bad pitch.

When choosing which shot you are going to play ask yourself :- ‘Can I putt this?’

If the answer is no again, then pitch is your last choice. If there are no obstructions in front of you and the fairway is smooth and dry then consider getting the putter out. The technique involved with the putter is the simplest mechanic in golf. If you are a little too far out to putt, grab an 8 or a 7 iron, put the ball back in your stance and lean towards the flag. Now simply putt. The angle of your shoulders will give you a descending blow and stop you from chunking it fat. Do not under any circumstances use wrists for this. Use your exact putting stroke.

If the ground is poor or there is an obstacle such as a bunker in the way then we need to move to our pitch shot. Pitching will be coming up in a future article so

stay tuned! Keep it simple, keep it smart and when possible, keep it on the ground!

Remember, the game is not about ‘how’ it is about ‘how many’!!

Enjoy the summer golf! David Muir
