ATHLETES COMPETE IN OLATHE
MASTERS
Twice per year on U.S. soil, there is a reunion of sorts where the tradition of the sport of track and field is celebrated. The first installment in 2013 occurred in Landover, Md., at the USA Masters Indoor Championships. The second, in warm and sometimes windy conditions in July, happened in Olathe, Kan., as more than 1,000 athletes ages 30-95+ came together to represent the true spirit of lifetime fitness.
Records were broken and national champions were crowned in Olathe as athletes used the meet to measure where they stand in preparation for the World Masters Athletics Championships, which are scheduled for October 16-27 in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
The 2013 edition of the outdoor championships were met with impressive performances.
Fans gathered around and handshakes followed shortly after as William Bell, Sr. (M91) shattered the world record in the men's pole vault by more than two feet, with his clearance of 2.05m/6-08.75.
Orville Rogers (M95, Dallas, Texas), who set an astonishing six world age group records during indoor competition in Landover, added another world mark to his credit with his winning time of 2:21.82 in the men’s 400m.
Charles Ross (M90) left Olathe win six national titles to his credit, which included the 100m (29.14), high jump (0.73m/2- 4.75) 800m (6:21.90), 80m hurdles (49.97), hammer throw (6.59m/21-7) and long jump (0.96/3-1.75).
Gloria Krug (W82) grabbed four national titles of her own that included wins in the discus (16.64m/54-7), triple jump (3.57m/11- 8.5). long jump (1.55m/5-1) and javelin (15.65m/51-4).
William Platts (M85, Boise, Idaho) dominated the competition in producing winning marks in both the pentathlon (4,624 points) and the men’s javelin (36.99m/121-4).
