USA Youth Outdoor Championships & Youth Trials

took down the 100m hurdles in 14.15 in his closest race, only winning by seven hundredths of a second.

Brandon Miller swiped three gold medals in five days after crossing the finish line first in the 11-12 boys’ 1500m final. Miller ran the anchor leg in the 4x800m relay, and won the 800m title.

Kendal Drewery also captured three national titles during the championships in the 11-12 girls’ division. Drewery won the pentathlon on the second day of competition with 2,928 points. Next, she out leaped everyone in the long jump with a mark of 5.14m/16- 10.50. Shortly after winning the long jump, Drewery posted the fastest qualifying time in the 80m hurdles, before winning the final the next day in 12.89.

Not to be outdone, on the boys’ side, Caleb Roberson pulled off a trifecta by winning the pentathlon with 2,915 points on the second day of competition and setting an American record in the process. On the final day of competition, he won the 100m dash in 12.37 and 80m hurdles in 12.20.

In the 13-14 boys’ 3,000m final, Seth Hirsch produced a performance people in Edwardsville will not soon forget. Hirsch, a 13-year-old, crossed the finish line in 9:08.41, thirty-four seconds ahead of the next competitor. His time was the second fastest for all age- divisions, only behind the 17-18 men’s 3,000m winner.

Some athletes dominated their field, while other competitions were not decided until the final meter or last attempt.

The most exciting race of the championships transpired in the 17-18 women’s 100m hurdles final. Emma Spagnola, Claudette Day, and Tyjah Eady appeared to cross the finish line simultaneously, but it was Day who finished first and set a new personal best of 14.18. Eady finished in 14.19 and Spagnola finished in 14.20.

The friendly and competitive rivalry of twins Julia and Anna Jordahl-Henry was on full display during the 11- 12 girls’ high jump. The highest clearance for both was 1.40m/4-07.00, but Julia won having fewer misses.

Four hundredths of a second decided the winner of the 15-16 boys’ 100m, Ian Braxton barely edged Jared Prince to win. For Braxton, the 100m was his second gold medal, he was also victorious in the 200m.

One inch made Gabriel Arcaro triumphant in the 17-18 men’s hammer throw. Arcaro launched the hammer 63.44m/208-02, squeaking by Brendan Duncan by a slim margin to take the win.
