How do distance learning courses compare to attending a class?

“I think a combination of distance learning and onsite training is acceptable, and the termused by the academics of ‘blended learning’ is here to stay.”

“There’s no doubt that distance learning is becomingmore prevalent in the hair/beauty/fitness sectors - and rightly so. It lends itself well to knowledge based units and introductory typemodules. It’s important thatmodern day learning reflects the opportunities presented by technology and that students, in particular adults, are presented with flexible options for completing their learning.

“However, for skills basedmodules leading to validated certificates and diplomas, it’s hard to replicate the benefits of ‘onsite training’ where students get to interact, practice and get feedback in real time. It would seemto be the opinion ofmany that this type of learning ismore ‘real’ and provides for better outcomes.

“So I think a combination of distance learning and onsite training is acceptable, and the termused by the academics of ‘blended learning’ is here to stay.”

“Learning and studying don’t have to be confined to the classroomenvironment, but it does undoubtedlywork better for certain subjects and certain people.”

“Youwouldn't learn to drive a carwith distant learning so beauty is no different!”

“In the beauty industry there really is no comparison when it comes to distance learning vs. attending class. What we do is fundamentally based on one-to-one experience, touch and customer interaction and this is something that can't be fully obtained fromtext books, printed notes, or through live or pre-filmed online tutorials.

“In a classroom, students are free to ask asmany questions as they need to fully understand the texts and this interactive set up gives the teacher the opportunity to pass on ways of remembering and understanding themore difficult elements of the syllabus. Students learn fromworking on each other; learning fromeach other's mistakes or strengths and they will also learn how to treat a customer with care and respect.”

“In the comparison of learningmethods I would have to say it really does depend on the student and their learning type, life demands, time restrictions etc. and of course the subjectmatter. Learning and studying doesn’t have to be confined to the classroomenvironment, but it does undoubtedly work better for certain subjects and certain people.

“In the beauty industrymany of the topics and subjects are practical. I feel for these techniques andmethods to bemastered itmust be in a practical environment under supervision, so a class works better.

“However in the case of theory, it’s debatable as some people are very capable, focused and driven. These individuals canmanage their time and resources very well, and could thereforemanage home or distance learning. On the other hand, some pupils will need encouragement and support to keep themon track. Theymay prefer the class environment and group learning and activities. Either way with theory it’s a case ofmemory and repetition, and this is something we can do in or out of the classroomset-up.”

“Education is always awonderful thing, nomatterwhat type, but distance learning courses and attending a class in- person each have different benefits.”

“I believe that distance courses are a fabulous way to obtain a great deal of product knowledge without having to take toomuch time away fromyour everyday life. You will be able to soak up a lot of facts andmake yourself a strong authority on ingredients and benefits, but this type of learning isn’t ideal for treatment technique.

“By attending a class in-person, beauty therapists are able to participate in hands-on learning, which is so important in our industry. They will be able to touch and feel products, see the results in person, and gain invaluable experience utilising the treatment products. I truly believe in continuing education whenever possible, so take advantage of either opportunity to learn as they arise!”
