Frequently Asked Questions about the USA Curling Level I Instructor Certification Program
How can I schedule a course in my club? Te first step for scheduling a course is to contact your Regional Co-
ordinator of Instruction. A list of Regional Coordinators can be found on the USA Curling website. If a Regional Coordinator of Instruction for your area has not yet been identified, contact Kim Nawyn, Growth & Development Manager, at
kim.nawyn@
usacurl.org. USA Curling will try to accommodate all requests from clubs. How-
ever, course conductor availability or previously scheduled courses in the region may impact availability. I want to sign up for a course. Is there one in my area?
Courses will begin to be posted to the Sport Education Calendar on
the new USA Curling website in late July. Registration will be completed online through USA Curling SportsSignup. Please contact Christy Her- ing at USA Curling at (715) 344-1199, Ext. 207, if you experience diffi- culty when registering for a course. How much does it cost to enroll?
Courses at dedicated ice clubs will be $45.00 per person, including
lunch. In situations where an arena club needs assistance with the cost of ice rental, the club has the option of offering the course at the higher rate of $65.00 per person. All of the additional funds will go directly to the club to help offset the cost of ice rental. How do I become certified as a Level I instructor?
In addition to attending the course and passing evaluation exercises,
candidates for certification must complete at least five hours of instruc- tional activity with beginning curlers. (Hours completed prior to the course do not count toward certification.) An active certification in first
aid is also required. Tis can be earned through various online and in- person third party courses. A minimum of two (2) years of curling expe- rience is required for certification. Less experienced curlers in emerging clubs may be afforded the opportunity to take the course during their first year as part of their club’s effort to develop trainers; however, certifi- cation will only be awarded aſter two years of curling experience. Do changes in this program affect my current certification status? No. Anyone who was certified under the previous curriculum (or is
currently in the certification process) remains certified. However, the USCA Training and Instruction Committee recommends that previ- ously certified instructors review the new manual, which will be avail- able to those individuals upon request in September. USA Curling is also working to schedule a webinar to discuss changes to the program with previously certified instructors this fall. Do I need to be certified to teach new curlers at my club?
While USA Curling encourages all individuals who are interested in
training new curlers to enroll in the program, clubs are responsible for recruiting volunteer instructors and setting standards for their own pro- grams. Contact your club’s training coordinator if you are interested in volunteering in this capacity. Will Level II Instructor courses be offered this year?
Te USCA Training and Instruction Committee will be revising the
Level II course curriculum during the 2013-14 season. Te new Level II program is expected to be ready by August 2014. It is also anticipated that a Level III course will be developed in the future. What if I have additional questions about the program or my certification status?
