USA Curling National Championships, De George has written many sto- ries promoting the event as well as the sport and its athletes. As Philadel- phia prepares to host another curling championship in 2014, De George has been active in promoting the upcoming event through stories and social media. T e Bruce Bennett Media Award honors Bruce Bennett of Duluth,

Minn., who captured the many aspects of curling – the people, the com- petition, the strategy, and the skill. He was able to convey, in his stories, the essence of the game, for curlers and non-curlers alike. He wrote about curling with passion and enthusiasm. Bennett was responsible for generat- ing interest in the sport and expanding the curling community throughout the curling world through his newspaper stories, as well as in curling pub- lications in the U.S. and Canada. He covered local competitions, national curling championships, four World Curling championships, and the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Duluth in 1998. Bennett was an ambassador for all

curlers and for the sport of curling. T e award is presented to those who ex- emplify Bennett’s sustained journalism skills for the promotion of curling. “I am extremely honored to have my name stand alongside Mr. Bennett’s

and all the past recipients of this award and immeasurably grateful to USA Curling for this honor,” De George said. “I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunities I’ve had to cover curling and the chance to meet many of the great people involved with growing the sport, and to add this honor to the wealth of experiences I’ve had with the sport is beyond words.” A graduate of Saint Joseph’s University, De George has worked at the

Delaware County Daily Times since 2010. In addition to curling, De George also regularly covers high school and college sports in Delaware County as well as the Philadelphia Union Major League Soccer franchise. His fi rst book, “Duels in the Pool,” chronicling the greatest rivalries in swimming history, will be released this summer. “In many ways, I see my gravitation toward the sport as typical of many

Americans. What started as casual exposure during the Olympics has blos- somed into a deeper interest in the intricacies of the game and an appre- ciation for the level of skill required to curl on an elite level,” De George said. “I hope that that sort of genuine interest shines through in my stories. Coupled with the dynamics of the elite curling world and the rich personal stories that so many athletes bring to the rink, it’s a dream to write about it." T e Bruce Bennett Media Award recipients are determined by USA Curl- ing’s Media and Public Relations Committee. ■
