// FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK What makes me a curler? By Terry Kolesar, Editor, terry.kolesar@usacurl.org

In fact, I'm a champion curler, if you count the annual Brass Whisk Media Bonspiel, which pits the world media staff against one another each year at either the men's or women's world championship at a location far, far away from the real competition ice. Aſter many years of losing the Brass Whisk, 2013 was my year to prevail while in Riga, Latvia, serving as USA's press officer at the 2013 World Women's Championship. I also once was the Tues- day Night Women's League champion at the Stevens Point Curling Club. While I wish I could curl in a league these days, my job requires me

P

to travel extensively during the traditional league season in Stevens Point. Our fearless leader, Rick Patzke, has curled in leagues in Waupaca since 1996 when he came on board at the USCA office. Kim Nawyn has curled since 2006 and even has a playdown on her resume (2012 mixed doubles). Dawn Leurquin played a few seasons in Stevens Point and was the only person I ever saw deliver and hit one of the benches in between the sheets of ice. (Sorry, Dawn, this still makes me giggle.) Our veteran officemate Sandy Robinson (on staff since 1986) and Christy Hering have other hobbies that keep them busy, but they always throw a few rocks at the holiday party if curling is our activity of choice at the annual staff celebration. Everyone I work with has a passion for the sport. Tey may not be the people you see each Monday night on the ice, but they are the people working in the curl- ing trenches helping the sport that we all love continue to grow. Tey work with professionalism, creative savviness, and in great partnership to serve all of you, and I'm happy to call them my teammates here at the national office. So, what makes a curler a curler? Is it someone who plays in multiple

eople are oſten curious if I am a curler. And, my answer to that is yes, of course, I am. While it may not be as oſten as all of my readers, I am proud to say that I have been a curler since 2002.

Ingredients of a curler may be in the eye of the beholder leagues or once a week? Is it someone who plays in a few bonspiels a year but not in a league? Is it someone who works or volunteers for the sport but doesn't throw any stones? I think it is all of the above and look forward to meeting more and more curlers on my journeys in and out of your clubs. New website launches

Visitors to the USA Curling website are now seeing the new re-branded

design at www.usacurl.org. Te new site has been completely redesigned and operates on the digital platform of the United States Olympic Commit- tee (USOC). Twenty-three other National Governing Bodies are utilizing this platform. As with any website migration, users may find content or navigation challenges. Te website will continually evolve as we strive to make improvements to give you the best possible USA Curling website. Assistant Editor Rick Patzke's note: USA Curling would not be where it

is today in terms of Internet and social media reach without the significant support of long-term sponsor Dan Field and his companies, Kodiak Tech- nologies and AtomAmpd. Dan became an enthusiastic backer of USA Curl- ing in 2000, and has hosted the organization’s website since then. Without his significant financial and technical support, usacurl.org would no doubt have buckled during the 2006 Olympics, when more than 100 million vis- its were received in the month of February alone. We sincerely appreciate Dan’s support, and are grateful for his continued sponsorship as the website moves onto the U.S. Olympic Committee platform.

Super Bowl 2014 We are proud and excited to let you know

Your "in-turns only, please" Curling News editor during the 2013 Brass Whisk Media Bonspiel in Riga, Latvia. Not sure what this is evidential proof of.

that curling has once again been invited to be part of the Super Bowl Village for the XLVIII Super Bowl in 2014. Tis time, we'll take the New York City/Hoboken, New Jersey, area by storm. We will have a street curling demonstration in Hoboken for about a month starting with the lead up to the Super Bowl (Feb. 2) and through the 2014 Olympic Winter Games (Feb. 7-23). We can't make this event happen for nearly 30 days without the support of super volunteers, so anticipate a phone call or email from us in the coming months as we continue to formulate our plans with the City of Hoboken and National Football League. n
