Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, USA Curling has been redeveloping the Level I Instructor certification course. Te class, which is geared toward building club membership through safe, fun, and effective training tech- niques, is scheduled to relaunch in August. Over the past year, the organization’s Training and Instruction Com-
E
mittee, consisting of both USA Curling staff and approximately a dozen curlers from around the country, has evaluated and restructured the con- tent and administration of the course. While the committee retained as- pects of the course that were effective, changes include incorporation of a four-step base delivery (previous curriculum taught three-step), focus on effective teaching techniques, and methods of accommodating individu- als with physical limitations. Te revised curriculum includes a detailed manual that will be distributed as an electronic document. Participants will also be given the opportunity to purchase printed copies for a nominal

fee during the registration process. To familiarize everyone who will be teaching the course with the new
Level I curriculum, USA Curling held a course conductor training seminar in St. Paul, Minn., in mid-May. While some of the individuals in attendance have been active course conductors with USA Curling Instruction for years, many are new to this role. Efforts were made to recruit candidates from areas of the county that had previously been underserved by the program, including the South and West. As a result of this training, approximately 30 people are gearing up for team-teaching the revised Level I classes this fall. It is anticipated that at least two dozen Level I Instructor classes will be
offered throughout the various regions prior to the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Scheduling is currently in progress and will continue during the next few months. Check the USA Curling Sport Education webpage begin- ning in late July for a list of scheduled classes. Tis program would not be possible without the financial support of
Te Chicago Community Trust, World Curling Federation, and the United States Curling Association. n
