failure and explains why no cracks appeared on the test stand despite the use of low safety factors. From the experiments, the


researchers concluded the local durability of CGI shows a strong dependence on the local microstruc- ture. A variance and regression analysis under consideration of local graphite morphology and ferrite/pearlite ratio shows good correlation between mea- sured and predicted durability values. Applying casting process simula-


tion results in designing the durabil- ity engine layout leads to double the cycles until failure compared to the layouts predicted by conventional methods. Tis matches experimental results. According to the authors of the paper, the integration of process simu- lation in the durability layout of cast components is a key technology for successful lightweight design.
