Kellogg’s has implemented Honey- well RF barcode scanners as part of its automated supply chain. Kel- logg’s uses the scanners through- out its UK distribution centres and warehouses, with locations around north west England and north Wales. The company’s operational processes are barcode driven and are therefore dependent on 100% availability of the equipment.

New MD for Jungheinrich
JUNGHEINRICH UK HAS announced the appointment of Hamid Khajehpour as Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) product manager. With a MSc in logistics and a HND in mechanical engineering, Khajehpour has worked in the logistics and IT sectors for over 20 years and has extensive experience in the design and implementation of warehousing and distribution operations and associated IT sys- tems at both national and international levels. Khajehpour’s appointment ties in with the company’s recent acquisition of ISA-Innovative, a warehouse management systems software company.

B&R is setting new standards with its re- dundancy solution for X20 control systems, a breakthrough that now allows the advan- tages of high availability to be enjoyed by smaller applications at much lower cost. B&R’s solution is based on standard X20 controllers that can be reconfigured at any time with features reducing down-time
using the Automation Studio software development environment. This eliminates the need for specialised redundancy controllers, which are generally very expensive. In B&R’s solution, one controller provides active control, while a second controller runs in the background in standby mode. All network functions are monitored continu- ously so that if the time comes, the back-up controller can quickly take over all of the active PLC’s functions. Whichever controller becomes active it always uses the same IP address as its predecessor. The switching time of the system is a mere two task cycles - so all of this takes place in a matter of a few milliseconds. This redundancy solution is powered by the high performance, real time Ethernet POWERLINK communication protocol. An independent high speed fibre optic redundancy link is used to continually synchronise all important data - the I/O image, for example - between the ac- tive and inactive controllers. CARLSBERG HAS EXTENDED its SSI Resident Maintenance Service Agreement with SSI Schaefer for an additional three years. The agreement paves the way for a new type of contract in connection with large, complex systems and describes intelligent and differenti- ated maintenance.
SSI Resident Maintenance means that an SSI Schaefer team is stationed permanently at the cus- tomer‘s site, in this case in Denmark, and responds quickly to
problems and participates in work processes and meetings.
Seventeen technicians from SSI Schaefer are permanently sta- tioned at the fully automated logis- tics facility in Denmark. “SSI Schaefer offers us direct opera- tional support, which is based on situational maintenance. We are very satisfied with the mainte- nance solution that we have achieved together. However, it is an ongoing process that not only requires a constant focus, but also
steady development,” summarised Jesper Fabricius, technical director at Carlsberg.
