Feature Test Systems A measure of success

Recent investments in high level metrology equipment at Birmingham-based specialist subcontractor GB Precision, mean that customers in demanding industry sectors such as aerospace and motorsport can be assured of receiving components offering pinpoint dimensional accuracy and geometric conformance

company’s newly refurbished Metrology Laboratory, which houses a wealth of measurement and inspec- tion technology, ensuring compli- ance with GB Precision’s ISO 9001:2008 accreditation. Today, components and tools for many high-tech engineering applica- tions must meet extremely challenging geometrical conformance targets. Achieving these levels of accuracy, precision and repeatability demands not only the highest production skills and use of the best machinery, but also the investment in metrology to check and demonstrate that compliance. GB Precision can offer its customers this precise combination.

Shafts and holes are very common geometrical elements in aerospace and motorsport parts, and often require a full analysis of accuracy. The com- pany’s Mitutoyo RA2100 Roundness Tester conducts measurements of cylindricity, concentricity and perpen- dicularity (as well as other more spe- cialist measurements), added to which, the flexible design of the equipment allows for set-up of an

As a result, dra- matic improvements can be made in the accuracy of machining processes, due to the insights provided into the forms and geometries being machined, particularly with regard to blends between surfaces. extensive range of different geome- tries. A typical part with a diameter of 50mm and a length of 100mm can be measured geometrically with sub micron accuracy.

Complementing the Roundness

Tester is a Mitutoyo Formtracer SV- C3000, which is used for the very accurate tracing of complex forms and geometries. After collecting the data, the Formtracer analyses the information, producing an on-screen display of the results, which are then used to generate the actual geometry of the component - measuring actual features and the distances and toler-

A third piece of equipment avail- able in the laboratory is the Mitutoyo Surftest SJ-401, which can measure surface finish on both flat and curved surfaces and provides a printout of the results - particularly useful, as GB Precision is finding that increasing numbers of customers are now asking for a specific level of finish - for example between 0.4 and 0.8Ra. In addition, in the Metrology Laboratory there are two Mitutoyo flat- bed coordinate measuring machines - a Crysta 7106 and a BHN-710 which fea- ture full CNC control, scanning capabil- ity, probe change rack and probe orientation for measuring complex parts in a single set-up.

Enter 216 Improved robotic weld quality testing during automotive vehicle manufacturing

Now available from Cropico is the company’s DO4000 range of digi- tal milliohmmeters that provide improved testing of robotic weld quality during automotive vehicle manufacturing. The portable and rugged instrument includes several advanced fea- tures to test accurately the integrity of welding during body part assem- bly as an integral part of an advanced quality control programme. It can also be used to improve the measurement of other areas of automotive production including testing resistance of airbag detonators and battery crimp terminations.

Features of the DO4000 include forward and reverse current mea- surement with auto averaging, true current zero, long scale length and a selectable measurement range from 40mW to 4kW with respective reso- lutions between 10mW and 1W. Within the range, model 4001 also includes temperature compensa- tion, with preset coefficients for copper and aluminium plus user set- table coefficients for other materials. Temperature measurement over the range -50°C to 800°C is also available.

Protection up to 415V rms is provided at the measurement terminals and pushbutton operation is achieved easily by clearly marked function controls. Direct reading measured values are displayed on a four digit LCD display.

Over range and low battery indication is also provided and warning 30 JUNE 2013 Automation
