soundcard, and an MFB 522 drum machine. This little thing has made it into every track I’ve made since I bought it! It’s made by a Berlin- based company, Ing-Büro Manfred Fricke Berlin. It’s awesome for noisy percussion and hi-hat patterns, or just to fatten tracks up. Plus, it’s so small I can take it with me everywhere! Love it.“
JESCO : “Cytomic’s The Glue is one of my absolute favorite compressors. It’s a software plug-in, but it’s great on just about everything, from gentle mix bus compression to complete punishment of individual instruments.“
You are constantly changing your studios — what’s next? CORD : “I would really appreciate a little more room, because my studio is my office, it is my funky laboratory. Here you see prototypes of Punchi towelling scarves, my Mum’s accordion, my new Telecaster, and again, the Korg SV-1.“
SACHA : “My set-up consists of a pair of over 20-year-old Technics 1210 MK2s, which I bought second-hand in Edinburgh in 1998, and two of the cheapest CD players known to man. My mate Schätzchen built the actual “console“ for me out of scrap wood, metal parts and spraypaint.
“I started DJing and consciously buying vinyl in my native Brussels, Belgium back in 1995. Nowadays I mostly use Pioneer CDJs when I am playing in clubs — but for the most part, I’ve played vinyl out of my collection. It’s like a diary. I love getting inspired from my old records — it’s a great feeling to re-discover tunes I haven’t heard in ages.“
So what are your favorite bits of kit? CORD : “One of my favorites is my first electric
guitar — a Fender Squier Stratocaster. I started playing this a few years before I discovered turntables and computers for making music. I’m reworking it right now with new pick-ups (Leosounds Redhouse single coils for those who know!), new electrics, static shielding and new strings. I also fell in love with the Korg Stage Vintage SV-1 when I saw it at Jesco’s place. To make the decision to buy one of these classy and pricey instruments easier, Jesco allowed me to hijack his for a while... now I don’t want to live without a proper E-Piano anymore.
“I am also trying out the Moog Little Phatty at the moment, because I just cannot decide what analogue synth to buy... this one belongs to my girlfriend‘s brother, who just moved back to the US.“

Any tips for getting a great sound? SACHA: “I‘ve spent a lot of time working with a certain set of studio headphones, the Beyerdynamic DT-990 Pro. They’re not fully flat, but fun to produce on, because they’re comfy and bassy! Cord and Jesco are using them too, so sonically we can always feel at home in the other places, although we all have different monitoring... it’s a flexible solution to work in a modular way, while still staying on the same page.
“Individually we all use different monitors. I’ve used super-cheap Wharfedale speakers for years, which now serve as my DJ monitors, and recently I bought a pair of Adam P11 monitors second-hand from a rock producer in Berlin. Nice and crispy sound, but quite small — an additional Adam Sub 8 does the trick for the low-end. But until I’ve got a Funktion One in my living room, the ultimate road-test for any new track will remain a beefy club PA and a sweaty crowd!“
