ROUND TABLE KNIGHTS
Round Table Knights hail from Switzerland and have been steadily building up a loyal following all over Europe with their insatiable brand of quality house music. With an ear for a good tune, some spanking productions and a weekly radio show, DJ Mag thought it would be good to join these Knights around the table for a bit of a parley. Chris tells us more…
How did it all start for Round Table Knights? “We started DJing together 12 years ago. We were originally a turntablism team coming from hip-hop and scratching, but always really open-minded to any good sounds. We started playing in a small club and didn’t have a name. There was this hip-hop record we found with a rapper singing ‘Round Table Knights’. It was perfect for scratching in the intro to our sets, so we stuck with it! I’m happy with it, it’s unique and people remember the name.”
How would you describe your sound? “For me, what we play is just house music. Music to listen to and of course, dance to. When I explain this to someone with no idea, they think when you class music as house it is really cheesy and commercial. This is just

one element of house music, there are varying genres that people like to add to their sound, but at the end, it’s all still house music.”
What is the musical focus for your weekly mix show? “It’s for younger people on a Swiss radio station. The idea is to get people warmed up for the weekend. We try to put in some new music, and get them ready to go out. It’s house music, some of it is our own music, and the rest other people we like.”
How is the dance music scene in your homeland Switzerland? “It’s always weird to talk about the scene in Switzerland, as I’m always surprised when people ask how many good DJs we have. There are lots — Deetron, Mercury from Gomma Records, then the whole Cadenza crew. In Zurich, we’ve got Animal Trainer, the Drumpoet Community, and that’s just a few, Geneva has Mental Groove. For a small country there are lots of exceptionally talented DJs and producers! And the good thing is, we all come together. There are lots of exchanges and collaborations between us all; recently we did an EP with Animal Trainer; there is a good music community, and we all invite each other to come play each other’s city.”
You run your own club night in Switzerland? “Yeah, Club Bon Soir is a year old now, it holds 300 people, and we play there once a month and all night long. We invite artists like Soul Clap, Justin Martin, Eats Everything, Jesse Rose, Claptone, Adana Twins. All the kinds of DJs and stuff we like.”
Your [cult singer-songwriter] Rodriguez re-edit received a lot of love, why did you decide to mix up this piece of music? “Mark did this edit even before the movie, then the film came out and there was more attention on it. He lost the whole file, so had to re-do it again. I was surprised, it was a free download, and it got thousands of plays and super feedback. The best part for me was that Rodriguez himself posted it the night after they won the Oscar [for the biopic Searching For Sugarman]!”
What’s next for Round Table Knights? “We’ve just finished a track for the ‘Five Years Of Trackmode’ compilation; we also mixed them up for the compilation, and there will be a tour of this around Europe. We are also working on new tracks and collaborations in the studio. And there will be a new EP in August as well.”
