Words: IAN MCQUAID ON THE FLOOR HIGH FIVE1
SUNDAY JUNE 23 ADAM BEYER
ELECTRIC DAISY CARNIVAL 2013, LAS VEGAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY, LAS VEGAS, CA
JUNE 21 – 23 AFROJACK, MAJOR LAZER, CARL COX, AVICII, TIESTO & MORE
LOVE IT OR HATE IT, Electric Daisy can’t be ignored. At the time of writing tickets have officially sold out, so if you want to get in to the craziest show on Earth you’re gonna have to scour the internet for ticket resellers. Electric Daisy has grown with the boom in EDM and can now claim to be one of the States’ most recognized events, the go to place to hear arena sized, speaker blowing anthems from all shades of the dance spectrum. The full line up is waaaaay too long to go into here, but just for tasters the big headliners include Afrojack, Major Lazer, Carl Cox, Bloody Beetroots, Tiesto and Avicii – who we’ll assume won’t be repeating his bizarre new folk rave direction premiered to utter bemusement at Ultra Festival earlier this year. Or maybe he will. Who knows. Representing the bassier end of things are a host of veterans and eager young pups including Flosstradamus, Borgore, Baaur, Noisia, DJ Fresh, Etc!Etc! and Andy C, while more serious techno heads can enjoy Green Velvet, Richie Hawtin and Proxy. The Carnival itself is a dayglo dream/nightmare of funfair rides, fluffy bras, moon boots, neon make up, hard bodies and candy flavoured faces. If anything, it’s an experience and one vision of how EDM in the United States is meant to be. Purists should probably steer clear, but open minded fun lovers and new dance converts will have the time of their life.

OUTPUT ARE serious about their parties. Very serious. For people who are sick of celebrity club culture, endless Instagram memories and idiots with glow sticks, Output is for you. There’s no guestlist, there are no cameras allowed and there are no suits allowed. Mobile phones are actively discouraged and entry prices are kept as reasonable as possible. All of this is in aid of bringing back the spirit of the dance underground, where losing yourself to the rhythm is king. It’s worked well for the promoters and recent events have been packed - unsurprisingly music lovers have taken well to a club where you can do what you like, safe in the knowledge you won’t be tagged doing it on Facebook the following Monday. Swedish Techno pioneer Adam Beyer is a perfect fit for the event. His labels Drumcode, Code Red, Truesoul and Mad Eye have set the pace for machine funk for near two decades now, firing out missive after missive of hard, jacking rhythm loops. At Output he’s going to be in full Drumcode mode taking charge of the decks all night for a mammoth set of spartan techno bombs. It’s a rare chance to catch Beyer in New York playing the whole night solo and could well prove to be the stuff of legends. Just leave your fairy wings and fluoro tutu at home.
