shelf tag onto, and that’s certainly the case here with Berlin-based Rampue’s debut EP. There’s a warmth that comes from using real instrumentation, and a kind of summery innocent feeling that is really quite hard to label.

Renato Cohen

Roly Poly EP Systematic Recordings 7.0

There seems to be a bit of an acid theme to this month’s electro releases, and here Brazilian DJ/ producer Renato Cohen comes up with three tracks that boil and bubble around sequenced lines and pitched-down vocals to great effect, particularly on the title cut. ‘Goodfunky’ introduces a bit of slapping bass that is a bit of a hallmark for Cohen, and ‘This Time’ brings a bit of an old skool NY flavour to close proceedings.

Tom Rowlands Through Me/Nothing But

Pleasure Phantasy

9.0

Yep, that Tom Rowlands. These two stormers could easily be from the Chemical Brothers’ ‘Battleweapons’ series, as they are both stripped-back, yet packed full of ideas and aimed squarely at the dancefloor. ‘Nothing But Pleasure’ sounds the more like a ‘finished’ CB track of the two, but both are essential. The man himself explains that it’s a release to plug a Chems-sized gap in 2013, and hints that they’ll be getting together to work on new material soon.

Asbo Kid England’s Dreaming

(Remixes) Corsair Records 9.0

The second single from James Atkins & Justin Welch’s dancey collab ‘SUS Laws’ album stands on its own four feet, but this package also pulls together some top remixes. Richard Norris (The Grid/ Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve) throws his hat into the ring with a pulsing, brooding affair, DPPLGNGRS bring their dancefloor nous to the party and Embryonik weaves his sweet synthwave magic. 2K Subs take all the plaudits, though, with another of their majestically accomplished tech-electro outings.

The MES EP Corsair Records

9.0

Electronic music has a long history of making great theme tunes and soundtracks, and ‘The MES EP’ is unashamedly pointed in that direction. Lead track ‘The Man With The Last Laugh’ has a storming rhythm of tabla beats mixed with classical cellos, electro buzzsaws, Middle-Eastern strings and cinematic harpsichords. ‘The Protagonists’ sounds like a 21st Century electro John Barry, whilst ‘St Mawes’ is all Finlandia orchestral swirls over lazy hip-hop beats.

Mark Moore & Kinky Roland

Dreams Of Deja Vu Fetch Records 8.0

Acidy electro goodness here, with a proper ‘deep and dark’ groover that manages to sound like a throwback and a fast-forward at the same time. Label boss Kinky Roland teams up with Mark Moore, and together they enlist Billie Ray Martin on vocals to create what is simply a masterclass on how to make a subtly squelchy throbber. Why Mr Moore in particular isn’t making more releases all the time is quite baffling. Class.

Rampue

Mama Was A Progrocker Audiolith Records 7.0

It’s always nice to have something that you can’t just slap an off-the-

Deeply atmospheric, ‘90901’ builds up an imposing intensity over five minutes that is admittedly a long way away from any ‘hands-in-the- air’ moments. ‘70709’ has a bit more of the mutant electro-house about it, with a groove and chopped vocal stab that is made for a dark room and minimal lighting. As you might guess, it’s produced with pure analog equipment, namely Roland TR-909s and TR-707s.

Strip Steve

Micro Mega (Remixes) BNR

6.0

A release featuring this many remixes runs the risk of being a mixed bag, and that’s the case here. Frenchman Théo Pozoga is Strip Steve and all these re-rubs are versions of tunes taken from his debut album ‘Micro Mega’. The Funk D’Void version of top single ‘Stomp’ works really well, as does the Jimmy Edgar remix of ‘One Thing’. It’s also good to have The Glimmers back with their take on ‘Radiocheck’.

Turbo Turbo

Breakdown Analysis EP GND

8.0

With the great remix from Turbo Turbo of Bad Life’s indie act Swim still ringing in my ears, it’s good to have their own new release. The three tracks all plough a similar furrow, whilst being separate enough to warrant repeated listens. ‘Shells’ is quirky/urgent, the title track has a catchy, housey insistence and ‘Your Mind’ opens things up with a militaristic beat and more old skool housey flavours.
