hen did deep house get so damn popular in the UK? Look left, and there's a TV-advertised Ministry Of Sound 'Best Of Deep House' compilation; to the right, and there's the likes of Duke Dumont and Disclosure flying high in the national charts. A far cry from the US-derived fizzy stadium dance that's broken like a digital tsunami
over our consciousness in the last year, the deep house that's become the dominant UK sound of late has risen to its position with a slow but inexorable creep, seeping up from its subterranean roots. And it's a new mutation. It's credible, but accessible, an amalgam of different components that are familiar and exciting to many; a patchwork of influences from dance music's recent past with an ultra-bright, aquatic blue, clean modernist sheen. Crucially, its roots are in the underground, powered by DJs who are true to club culture but unafraid to inject their beats with vocal hooks and melodies to ride roughshod over raw sub-low basslines and gritty electronics. Quickly ascending George Fitzgerald is one of its champions.
