no clear winner between the two, though. Deliciously dark-hearted, either will smash it.

Giuseppe Ottaviani & Eric Lumiere

Love Will Bring It All Around Black Hole Recordings 8.0

Ottaviani paints the opening minutes of his mix from a deep, brooding sound palette. Thundery drums and moody, atmospheric FX mark out this purposeful, but palpably minimal trance-progressive set-up. Eric Lumiere’s contribution brings the track’s light-bulb moment. Set against the understated production, his vocal stream-of-consciousness (akin to his turn on ‘Anthem’) makes the track snap.

Come Home Enhanced Music

9.5

There’s very little that’ll prepare you for how hands-down bloody brilliant ‘Come Home’ is. Sure to go down as one of Enhanced’s great all-timers, the track moves from atypical funky-chunky summer-house percussion through scene-stealing pads, chords and key-changes, up to sky-kissing synths almost before you know it. Jeera Lert’s simple, imploring vocal, meanwhile, will not leave a dry eye in the house. If you only buy one track this month...

Aly & Fila feat Chris Jones

Running Out of Time FSOE 9.0

First release from the new album, and a stated “new direction” from Egypt’s finest. If that direction is this type of more deeply cultured trance, we’re all for it. Coming from the very highest end of A&F’s quality scale, the ‘Original Mix’ pulls out every stop, with an inventive sound or nuance rarely more than 30 seconds away. Chris Jones, too, has never sounded better, and the ‘Uplifting Mix’ brilliantly increases the trance tempestuousness.

Armin van Buuren feat Trevor Guthrie This Is What It Feels Like

Quite the cause célèbre on release, the ‘non-trance-one’ still comes with

plenty of the sub-genre’s trimmings. Most, though, it has to be said, in the remix dept. Reasonable notes for Giuseppe Ottaviani, whose mix is only missing that killer lead line. No such issues for W&W, though. Their rework keeps (more than) one foot in the stompy tough-trance camp, and makes the best possible use of Guthrie’s poppy vocals.

Chris Porter

The Sky At Night Borderline 8.0

A release as notable for being Borderline’s best in the last 12 months, as it is for carrying the first Menno de Jong studio work in recent memory. The ‘Original’ is a balls- out, hammer-and-tongs offering, which occasionally sequences into some psy-acidic squall. Comeback kid Menno’s remix is frankly extraordinary, with its pacey tempo, judiciously robust feel and melodic- through-euphoric tone all faultlessly judged.

Ger Gleeson

Evolve Full Tilt 8.0

Hopefully signalling an end to the Full Tilt drought in my inbox, here’s Ger Gleeson with a brilliant piece of sleek, linear, but never-less-than- thrilling Prydz-y prog-trance. On their remix, Full Tilt give it a touch more floor stride with the drums, and a pinch more atmospheric distinction in the drop. There’s

There’s been a resurgence of highly-strung dramatic symphonica in trance recently. There are a few moments on ‘Surface Tension’ when you wonder if the needle on the Old Spice-o-meter is sailing towards the red. Before the orchestra takes over wholesale, though, the track re-channels down a less ponderous, more genuinely uplifting course. Fortified by some stabbing, driving tech-trance notes, its conclusion is solid to say the least.

Trancematic Magik Muzik 7.5

Starting around the 100mph mark and leaning on the accelerator pretty firmly thereafter, there’s no missing this release’s peak-time objectives. Aggressively filtering, phasing, warping and juggling its strong key sounds around, its occasional euphoric synth-line interludes appear more incidental than anything else. What we’re here for is blunt force beats, and FX with bite, on which ‘Trancematic’ roundly delivers.

Cosmic Gate

Storm Chaser Black Hole Recordings 8.0

‘Storm Chaser’ has been lurking surreptitiously in the Cosmics’ sets since serving as a Global Gathering anthem last year. Tardy release excused, the track wastes no further time marshalling breezeblock-heavy beats, astutely distorted bass and tweaking, oh-so-tense synth lines. On the remix, KhoMha throws some heavier tech rhythms into play and works the pitch wheel like a producer possessed. All told, title-appropriate dark, thundery business.

Mike Sonar

Hallotron Infinity 7.0

Nice new release from Infinity here. Mike Sonar’s latest is half trance, half progressive and (at the very least) half decent.

Alexander Popov

Lost Language Armind 7.5

Steely like a girder, Alexander exerts an early prog-trance thrall over ‘Lost Language’ (a tribute, perhaps?). When it comes, the euphoric upturn is almost a surprise. Highly effective track.

Mark Pledger & Rake feat Sabrina Feel You In The Sound

(Original Mix) Melodika 8.0

With an early show from a stabby, buzzing bassy intro riff, Mark’s latest makes a scant attempt at

TIM STARKPO Box 272, Oxford, OX3 8FJ QUICKIES

Transatlantic appeal. By the break, though, we’re back in familiar melodic drop/uplifting vocal/kick- ass leadline territory. No complaints!

Super8 & Tab L.A.

Anjunabeats 9.0

Following their Enhanced stopover, S8&T are back at Anjunabeats with pure magic in hand. If ‘L.A.’’s objective is to unashamedly crowd-&- fan-please, well... mission accomplished. What a month for trance!

York Farewell To The Moon (Alexander Popov

Remix) Planet Love 8.0

The first classic York bring- back couldn’t be a better affair. Popov elevates ‘Farewell’’s castaway feel perfectly for the 2013 floor to appreciate.
