The Miss America Pageant returns to Atlantic City’s historic Boardwalk Hall for three evenings of preliminary competition on Sept. 10–12. The popular “Show Us Your Shoes” parade will make its way down the Boardwalk on Saturday, Sept. 14, and will be followed by the final evening of competition at Boardwalk Hall on Sunday, Sept. 15 — broadcast live on ABC.

Once bustling with commercial fishing fleets and rumrunners, Historic Gardner’s

Basin today is home to the Atlantic City Aquarium, Crafters Village, Gilchrist Restaurant, Bayside Basin Antiques, and Back Bay Ale House, as well as deep- sea- and back-bay-fishing charters and cruises offered by Atlantic City Cruises. Gardner’s Basin also offers marine- education programs for schools, youth groups, and adult eco-tour groups, as well as maritime historical preservation programs.

Absecon Lighthouse abseconlighthouse.org

It’s 228 steps to the summit of New Jersey’s tallest lighthouse, where breathtaking

panoramic views of surrounding southern New Jersey await — just one block from the Boardwalk. Originally lit in 1857 and visible for 19.5 miles out to sea, Absecon Lighthouse was decommissioned and its lens extinguished in 1933. After a historic restoration, the tower reopened to the public in 1999, while the lightkeeper’s house reopened in 2001.

Steel Pier opened in 1898 and quickly became known for showcasing the world’s top

entertainers. Today, in the midst of a three-phase, $102-million renovation project that will introduce a new museum, a 2,000-seat ballroom, rides, restaurants, and nightclubs, Steel Pier thrills visitors with 24 modern-day amusement rides, games and prize wheels, a food court — and free admission.
