‘So impressive’ Downtown Tampa’s Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation

to get a behind-the-scenes look a week before the 2012 Republican National Convention (RNC) in Tampa, she not only made her decision for 2016, but also booked ACMG’s biennial Board Review Course for June 2013. It was during the tour that she was introduced to the new Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) — a perfect match for the Board Review Course — and all of the upgrades and technological innovations that were made at the Tampa Convention Center for the RNC.

“Tampa offers a great meeting-space package, a convenient hotel package with properties close by and reasonable rates, plus warm weather, top dining, culture, and history,” Dahlroth says. “It met all that we needed for our Annual Meeting.”

And the 25-year meeting-planning veteran should know what translates into success for her organization; she has been working with ACMG since 2003, first as an outside staff member at a meeting-planning company and then in-house when she was hired by the group in 2009.

Looking Toward 2016 Board Review Time

The ACMG 2016 Annual Meeting is expected to draw a group of 2,500 total, including exhibitors and professional atendees, most of whom are doctors and scientists. Meeting space is a key consideration for Dahlroth when choosing a destination, and the 600,000-square-foot Tampa Convention Center shines not only in terms of having the latest in audiovisual and technology, but also in its layout. The group will be using all of the meeting space on the first floor, including the smaller meeting rooms for workshops, commitee meetings, and offices, and Ballrooms A through D for concurrent sessions. They will use one of the exhibit halls for exhibits and the other exhibit hall for General Sessions.

The convention center’s scenic location on Tampa Riverwalk, downtown’s metropolitan waterfront along the Hillsborough River, is another selling point for Dahlroth. “It created a relaxing atmosphere for atendees during the 2009 convention,” she says. “Many took advantage of the outdoor areas to enjoy the

More immediately for ACMG, the 200-person auditorium at CAMLS, which opened in February 2012 not far from the convention center, is the “perfect” site for its Board Review Course in June, says Dahlroth, who also calls the entire facility “so impressive.”

Throughout the planning process for ACMG’s three Tampa meetings, the sales meeting staff at Tampa Bay & Company, the local convention and visitors bureau, has been instrumental in reaching out to local hotels to finalize room blocks, says Dahlroth. “They are both helpful and great to work with,” she says. “They understand our needs.”

The Riverwalk is lined with hotels, green spaces, and museums. The fact that a number of hotels are close to the convention center so atendees can walk to their meetings is a huge plus for Dahlroth. The Tampa Marriot Waterside Hotel & Marina, just steps from the convention center, was the main hotel for 2009 and will be used again for 2016. For those staying a litle farther from the convention center, a trolley connects the waterfront to the hotels in north downtown, geting them to and fro easily and in a fun way, says Dahlroth.
