Beefy’s Big Welsh Walk In Aid Of Te NSPCC in Wales
Long-time supporter of the NSPCC, Sir Stanley Thomas OBE, also announced today that he will chair the new NSPCC Wales Appeal board. Sir Stanley said: “I’m delighted to be a part of the team working on this new appeal. I’d like to take the opportunity to thank our new board members who will work with me to raise £3 million for children in Wales. Sir Ian’s walk is the first event of the appeal, and we hope that we will raise a significant sum to spur everyone on to be as generous as possible.”
Last month Sir Ian Botham OBE kicked off Beefy’s Big Welsh Walk in aid of a brand new appeal for the NSPCC in Wales. Beefy’s walk marks the launch of The NSPCC Wales Appeal, which aims to raise £3 million over three years to provide support and help to the most vulnerable children and young people across Wales.
Over three days in August, Sir Ian Botham - affectionately known as ‘Beefy’ - will walk along parts of the Welsh Coastal path, starting in Burry Port on Tuesday 6 August and finishing in Cardiff Bay on Thursday 8 August.
Sir Ian Botham said: ““I’m really happy to be back in Wales to help the NSPCC launch a brand new appeal - the NSPCC Wales Appeal. I feel honoured that Beefy’s Big Welsh Walk is the first major event in support of this new appeal. The route we’ve chosen will not disappoint as Wales has some of the most beautiful coastline in the world. I’m really looking forward to it.”
The walk route: Day 1 – Tuesday 6 August 2013, is a gentle nine mile walk along the Welsh coastal path from Burry Port to Gateway Holiday Park.
Day 2 – Wednesday 7 August 2013, is a challenging nine mile walk from Caswell Bay to Swansea Marine Museum. A perfect opportunity to take in some breathtakingly beautiful views. This day is sponsored by Trade Centre Wales.
Day 3 - Thursday 8 August 2013, is again a challenging walk but only six miles from Swanbridge to Cardiff Bay. Walkers will follow the costal path through fields and woodland into Penarth and will finish in Cardiff Bay. This day is sponsored by Admiral Insurance.
Sir Ian is encouraging everyone in Wales to come along and join him on the walk. Beefy’s Big Welsh Walk is open to people of all ages and abilities. The NSPCC is hoping that more than 200 people will join Beefy each day. He continued: “The support I’ve received over the years from the Welsh public has been fantastic and I hope this continues and that many of you join me in August to walk along the fabulous Welsh Coastal path”
Registration is £15 for individuals for one day or £25 for a family (two adults plus two children). For further details and online registrations please log on to :
www.nspcc.org.uk/beefy or contact the NSPCC Wales fundraising team on 0203 188 3658 or email :
beefy@nspcc.org.uk. Walkers will receive a fundraising pack and regular email updates from Sir Ian Botham and his team.
The money raised from this event will help to fund the NSPCC’s work in Wales. The charity provides direct services for children and young people across Wales who have experienced abuse or neglect. Alongside these direct services, the NSPCC is also there for all children through ChildLine, the 24 Hour online and telephone helpline. There is also a 24 hour helpline for adults who may have concerns about the welfare of a child.
Preventing abuse is key to the charity and the NSPCC now delivers the ChildLine Schools Service in primary schools throughout Wales. This new service helps 9 -11 year olds understand what abuse is, how to protect themselves and how to seek help if needed.
To celebrate the success of the walk, Sir Ian Botham and Max Boyce will host Beefy’s Big Welsh Ball at The Vale Resort on Thursday 8 August. Tickets are £100 per ticket or £1000 for a table or ten. For more information about this event please contact the NSPCC Wales Fundraising team on 0203 188 3658.
