Embarrassed By A “Red Face” – Treatments Are Available

Surprisingly “red faces” are a fairly common problem for the population of South Wales .This skin condition is more likely to occur in those who have the fairest skin and if you burn easily in the sun you are at higher risk of experiencing a red face, especially as you get older.

Regardless of skin type, the thickness of our skin decreases as we age and exposure to the sun significantly accelerates this process. As the blood vessels in our skin run through the dermis or deeper layer of skin, when this portion of the skin becomes thinner vessels become more visible and dilate more easily into the surrounding tissue.

The two most common reasons for having a “red

face” are: • Rosacea • 'Weathering' of the skin – experienced by those

who enjoy participating in outdoor activities such as regular walking, horse riding, playing golf.

There are many other skin conditions which may give the appearance of a red face such as seborrhoeic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis and even acne. It is recommended that you see your dermatologist to obtain the correct diagnosis as improvement in your condition will rely on receiving appropriate treatment for the problem.

Treating face redness with lasers For those suffering with facial redness secondary to rosacea or weathering, treatment with an appropriate laser such as the pulsed dye laser can produce significant results with 60 - 90% improvement in the condition. Patients report improvement in symptoms such as burning of the cheeks, normally associated with rosacea, after a course of pulsed dye laser treatment. A course of treatment involves 3 -5 treatments depending on the severity of the problem. Patients suffering with rosacea may need additional treatments if there are other symptoms such as red spots and pustules.

The results from such laser treatments can have a significant impact on both your physical appearance and your self esteem. Many patients who previously would not allow themselves to be seen without make-up suddenly feel able to face the world without covering up their faces.

This is especially true of male patients who are particularly distressed by having a visible red nose. Treatment with the pulsed dye laser has a high level of success in treating this problem.

Dr. Maria Gonzalez treats patients for rosacea and other causes of a “red face” on a regular basis and has a great deal of experience treating these conditions. Don’t forget - there is no need to cover up when very effective treatments are available.
